Termites Like Neighborhood Church

Termites really like our church and visit all the time, but they never want to become members or make a pledge. Instead, they are very happy hanging around eating our buildings. We want to be welcoming and love all creatures, but enough is enough.

So if you happen to drive by the church next week, the giant colorful tent you'll see is not a circus big top, it's a fumigation tent over the sanctuary.

Our buildings, with an abundance of wood, require constant vigilance to prevent and manage termite infestations. Through proactive maintenance, we are usually able to contain infestations to small areas and use localized treatments. However, some recent infestations are in inaccessible interior areas that require fumigation, a safe, and all-encompassing treatment permeating the entire structure.

The sanctuary treatment is scheduled for spring break, when the building is not in use. It will be completely aired out and ready for church the following Sunday.  Then over the next several months we will perform termite treatments - both localized and fumigation - to all of our buildings plus necessary wood repair and removal. Stay tuned.

D4$ Last chance this Sunday to sign up to be Dining for Dollars host!

The next  "semester" of Dining for Dollars Events will be the spring and summer months, May through September 2013 and we need a new batch of events for bidding, hoping that at least one or two could be family-oriented occasions. (We would also like to have the events evenly distributed throughout this period.)

If you would like to plan and host an event in the coming months, please contact Julie Hiroto or Josh Robern with a date/time/description by March 25.  Look forward to bidding on April 7 and 14, after each service.

Two Who Dared: The Sharps' War
Free Film Screening
Sunday, April 14th, 4:00 p.m.
Sanctuary

Join us in celebration and remembrance on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, as we witness an important Unitarian Universalist story of bravery.

Two Who Dared is the never-before-told story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, an American Unitarian minister and his wife, who boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe to help save imperiled Jews and refugees at the onset of World War II.  After seventeen ministers declined the Unitarian Association's request for relief volunteers in Europe, Waitstill and Martha Sharp were the eighteenth call. When they committed to the dangerous undertaking, they left their two young children in Wellesley, Massachusetts and traveled to Czechoslovakia. Over the course of two missions; in Prague (1939), and in Southern France (1940), the Sharps and their underground confederates played a vital role in saving thousands from persecution.

In 2006, the Sharps were recognized by the State of Israel as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem for risking their lives to save Jews and dissidents during the Holocaust. They are two of only three Americans to ever be so honored.
Through the inspiring true story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, Two Who Dared reveals a timeless lesson of human sacrifice and courage to be shared with future generations.

Spring Has Sprung!

Thanks to the great volunteer efforts by our church members, the Brandy Lovely Meditation Garden is a reality! We are thrilled to watch as the season progresses; changes are visible from week to week.

The garden provides a lovely place to meditate, hold meetings or small events, and is worth a visit just for fun. It's a place to connect with nature and to appreciate the commitment of the members of this church in creating this living sanctuary.

We are planning a special event later in spring to celebrate the garden and the volunteers who have helped it come to life.

Watch for the date!
