~ SUNDAYS AT BEACON ~

WE’RE BACK IN THE SANCTUARY FOR WORSHIP! PLEASE JOIN US.

Masks are optional. (Special seating area for mask wearers is available.)

SERVICE FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 11TH, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.

“MAY I SUGGEST? “ ~ Rev. Robin’s Final Sunday

ALL ARE WELCOME! You BELONG at Beacon. Spiritually open and intentionally inclusive since 1958.

“May I suggest, may I suggest to you; May I suggest this is the best part of your life?” So asks composer Susan Werner in the lovely song we will hear Austin sing this morning. Her lyrics offer us a frame for exploring with Rev. Robin the themes and messages she has shared with us over the past four memorable years as our Interim Minister. We’ve asked many questions and reflected on many “suggestions” together. Come take a walk down memory lane and celebrate the time we’ve shared. Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker, preaching, with Worship Associate Nancy Paxton, and music from Austin Shaw. CELEBRATION POTLUCK TO FOLLOW (see related article below)

JOIN US THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 11,

FOLLOWING THE SERVICE,

FOR A POTLUCK LUNCH HONORING REV. ROBIN’S

SERVICE TO OUR BEACON COMMUNITY

This will be Rev. Robin Zucker’s last Sunday with us before she relocates to Oregon, where she will serve as minister of Eastrose Fellowship UU in Gresham, a suburb in the Portland area. Her daughter and family live less than 2 miles away!

In appreciation for her ministerial leadership during particularly challenging times, we hope you will participate in a potluck lunch following the service.

With the goal of having a relatively balanced menu, here are suggestions about what to bring, based on members’ and friends' positions in the alphabet:

“N” – “Z”: Main dish (either with meat or vegetarian)

H” – “M”: Salad, e.g. green, pasta, fruit

“D” – “G”: Vegetable

“A” – “C”: Sweet treat

Other thoughts…

  • The first three categories overlap, of course.
  • Keep in mind that we have only a medium-size microwave and a fridge—that’s it!
  • If there’s a dish you would especially prefer to bring (instead of my suggestion), feel free to do.
  • If it is difficult or even inconvenient to bring a dish, just skip it. Mainly, we want your presence—as an expression of gratitude for Rev. Robin and to wish her well. Please join us for lunch following this Sunday’s service!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

In Beloved Community,

Roz Clark, rozrich41@gmail.com or 928-380-6502 (text or call)

It's going to be another fabulous year for music at Beacon!

BEACON SPOTLIGHT:

BEACON IN THE PRIDE PARADE

JUNE 17TH

Please join Rev. Robin and your fellow Beacon Congregants in this year’s Pride Parade on Saturday, June 17th, 2023.  The theme for our group is Side With Love.

The route follows Beaver to Aspen, then Aspen to San Francisco and San Francisco to Elm.  You may either march or cheer from the side!

March in the Parade:  We plan to gather at 7:00 am SHARP (as requested by the organizers) at Beaver and Elm on Saturday, June 17 to MARCH in the parade.  Angela and Chris will be in place to welcome everyone. We plan to have donuts and coffee at Beacon.  We will be walking! We have a large Side With Love banner, mini Pride flags, book marks, and rainbow-colored origami hearts to handout along the Parade route.  We will have a large speaker with a speaker playing “All You Need is Love" by the Beatles in a loop as we play along with kazoos.  Chris and Angela Hansen will be our safety monitors.  Rev. Robin will lead the way with our new Stand With Love banner!

Please wear a Beacon UU or Side With Love T-shirt, or any Pride T-shirt.

Cheer From the Side:  Wave mini Pride flags and play kazoos to "All We Need is Love" when we pass by!  Wearing Beacon or Side With Love T-shirt will make it easy to spot our group in a crowd.   The parade starts at 9:00 am.  Roz and Rich Clark are the point people for our Parade Cheering Section.  The meeting spot is San Francisco and Dale – feel free to park close to Beacon.

SPLINTERS FROM THE BOARD

On May 24th, the Board met and recognized the following for their contributions to the congregation: Yard Sale Team, Roz and Rich Clark for the help at the memorial service, Roz for her work organizing the pot luck for Rev. Robin, Angela Hansen for organizing the Pride March, and the finance committee for its work on the budget.

The Stewardship final accounting showed pledges amounting to $107,750. Katy Grant and Theresa deBoer are developing plans to increase rentals at the church. The Board forwarded to the finance committee its recommendation to increase the compensation package for a minister to $72,000 for housing and salary. The final budget will be voted on at the Annual congregational meeting.

Discussion was held on the current status of minister’s in the Search pool. Keith Kron, UUA Transitions Director, has communicated with his colleagues about the shortage of ministerial applicants. The Board will explore this further and bring recommendations to the Annual Congregational meeting on June 25th

The Board recommends that communication remain uppermost within the CLC and supports in-person meetings.

UPDATE ON THE NEW SEARCH STATUS

The Board reviewed the current status of ministerial applicants after a review of a letter from Keith Kron, UUA transitions director.

On June 18th after the worship service, Lynda Dorweiler will lead a discussion on the recommended options for our Search in the new fiscal year. Please bring your questions.

Lise shared that it has been a month since her mother's passing. She and her sister spread their mother's ashes on Mt Elden.

Bill lamented the passing of Ray, Dora's partner, last Sunday.

Gini recently moved her daughter to Brooklyn, hopefully in a trans-friendly neighborhood.

Robin recently auditioned for Jeopardy.

Thanks,

CHEAP LUNCH BUNCH

The date and location of next Cheap Lunch Bunch has yet to be determined. Please contact Anne via email (see below) or by phone at (928) 606-2064.

Please plan on doing a bag lunch on the first Thursday of each month and then having lunch at a local restaurant on the third Thursday. Doing this at standardized times should make it easier on everyone's calendars, and only doing a restaurant once a month should make it easier on our pockets.

To opine on the time and location of future gatherings and to be included in all the group's emails, please email Anne at wittke.anne@gmail.com

ACTIVATE AT BEACON WITH SOCIAL JUSTICE ALLIES!

The Social Justice Allies meet on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom to discuss issues and actions. If you wish to join them, contact the convener Paul Beier.

VUU REQUEST FOR NON-FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

TO AID ASYLUM-SEEKING IMMIGRANTS

While planning action on immigration, Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Chandler, AZ, was thrust into the heart of things when another UU congregation alerted them to a family who lives near VUU and is seeking asylum. VUU found the family of five sharing a crowded apartment with another asylum-seeking family of three, with a fourth on the way. VUU has made great headway in stabilizing these families, but every week there are new challenges.

To assist the families, VUU has created a Go Fund Me campaign and is reaching out to other AZ UU congregations for their non-financial assistance in getting the word out about this Go Fund Me campaign:

If you feel comfortable, would you please share this link on your social media?

The added exposure will help VUU continue to support these families as they navigate the asylum process.

If you have any questions/concerns about the campaign, please contact Mark Beehler, VUU Immigration Welcoming Team.

FLAGSTAFF AND SUSTAINABILITY

On April 2, we were fortunate to have Genevieve Pearthree from the Sustainability Office of the City of Flagstaff offer a Social Justice Witness in our service. She recommends that folks check out this website to become more involved in climate action here.

8TH PRINCIPLE

On November 20, 2022, Beacon UU Congregation proudly adopted the 8th Principle. Further information about the 8th Principle can be found here.

Volunteer At Flagstaff Food Center With Beacon!

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR

JUNE 28TH.

The Flagstaff Family Food Center utilizes small groups of volunteers for their dinner service. Beacon is looking for a group of five (5) to seven (7) volunteers for the 4th & 5th Wednesdays of every month, from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. The dinner service is at the FFFC Kitchen (1903 N 2nd Street) and is a hybrid operation with To-Go meals and Dine-in service.

Beacon's next volunteer date is Wednesday, June 28th from 3:00-6:00 p.m.  If dinnertime service does not interest you, please consider helping with prep from 10 a.m. until noon or pitching in at the warehouse on Huntington.

Volunteer Safety: Volunteers are required to wear a mask, closed-toe shoes, and long pants; regularly wash or sanitize their hands; and practice six feet of social distancing whenever possible. Gloves for food preparation and distribution will be provided at the kitchen to each volunteer. Plexiglass has been installed at the walk-up window as a safeguard against COVID-19. The center has enhanced cleaning protocols.

Mike Bruton is organizing monthly teams of Beacon UU volunteers. If you're interested in volunteering for the above dates, please contact Mike right away at mb312@hotmail.com.

More FFFC volunteer opportunities can be found here.

DONATION DESIGNATION

When you make donations by check or cash to Beacon, please be sure to designate whether the donation is PLEDGE or PLATE. Thank you for your continued support!

BEACON'S ENDOWMENT PLAN

The Beacon Endowment Plan, an important step to ensure that Beacon remains a strong and vibrant congregation for years to come, was approved unanimously at a Congregational Meeting on April 24, 2022. For more information about the Endowment Fund, please click here

A plaque is now hanging in the Social Hall to honor those who have contributed to the endowment. Your name can be there, too!

GIFTING SECURITIES TO BEACON

If you have securities held outside of a retirement account (i.e., not from your IRA, 401k, 403b, TSP, or other retirement account) and are interested in gifting some to Beacon, more information can be found here. This can be a tax-efficient way to make a gift to Beacon.

LEGACY GIVING TIP – DID YOU KNOW?

You don’t have to confess your age, but if you are 72 or older, you may be required to pay federal taxes on the RMDs, “required minimum distributions,” that you now must take from certain types of your invested retirement funds. Did you know that you may be able to reduce your tax bill by contributing to Beacon’s stewardship campaign or to Beacon’s new Endowment Fund?  See your tax consultant for more specific individual advice about whether you could benefit both Beacon and yourself by adopting this tax strategy.
EVERYDAY WAYS TO SUPPORT BEACON

1. If you shop at all at Fry's grocery, you can either sign up for your own VIP account (identifying Beacon UUC FE392 as your beneficiary) or use the church phone number (928-779-4492) to get any available discounts AND earn some money for Beacon. Currently, there are 8 households signed up, and Beacon earned $15.30 for this quarter.

If you want to take advantage of Fry's gasoline discounts, you'll want your own VIP account. You can create or edit an existing individual account at www.frysfood.com/account/create/ (Alt ID is typically your phone number.) Within your account settings, just click on Community Rewards and search for FE392 (Flagstaff's Beacon UU) to set Beacon as your beneficiary.

2. If you shop on Amazon, please use "Amazon Smile" and choose Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation (do not abbreviate UU) as your recipient. We will receive a 0.5% for every purchase and that can add up! Remember that you have to start each shopping session at smile.amazon.com for us to receive the donation.

3. You can order from any of the over 2,300 stores listed under iGive with a portion of your purchase being donated to Beacon. After creating your own account with a user name and password, select settings and "my cause" and type in Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation (do not abbreviate UU).

4. Basha's has a special debit card that you can charge up before shopping, and a portion of what goes through the debit card gets donated to Beacon because that card is tied to Beacon. Ask Anne Wittke for further information.

Have other ideas for our income incubator? Please leave them on a card in the bin in the lobby, or send them to Rev. Robin.
