The Beacon Board met by Zoom on 25 October and recognized the faithful work of Linda Ochi with her Sunday messages and Angela Hanson, Diana Roy, and Rich Clark for the excellent organization of community activities with Bingo and Happy Hour. Twenty-nine people attended the Happy Hour.
Tom Barbaric assumed the role of Board Secretary, and LSPT is still seeking a member-at large. Notation was made that insurance costs have increased. Changes are in process for contact information regarding our Charles Schwab account. Bill Towler and Steve Zeldes will be the new contacts since the previous contacts have moved away from the congregation.
The Endowment Third Quarter Report was approved. The Search Committee has received no information regarding ministers who have indicated an interest in relocating to Beacon.

BUILDING BRIDGES
INTERGENERATIONAL BUILDING BRIDGES VISITS AT BEACON
Our middle/high school Building Bridges world religions group has evolved into an opportunity for ALL AGES to explore the beliefs of other faith communities through visits to their places of worship.
QUAKERS or THE RELIGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS
Building Bridges is on a roll! Last month six Beacon members attended a meeting of The Flagstaff Insight Meditation Group. We were very warmly welcomed. The leader met with our group before the meeting started to provide some history of Buddhism. We then participated in a guided meditation. Some stayed for the dharma talk and discussion afterwards. It was an interesting and heartwarming experience.
On Sunday, November 12th at 10a.m., our Building Bridges Group will attend an unprogrammed meeting in Flagstaff, Arizona of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers. The address is 402 South Beaver Street Flagstaff, AZ 86001.
We are invited to stay for a potluck and discussion afterwards. Dru will remain for that and all are welcome according to our Quaker contact who said: "We always have plenty of food." Please let Dru know if you will join us for any or all of the experience at edrumonroe@gmail.com, and I will look for you before the meeting.
Heads up: As this is an unprogrammed meeting, it will probably be entirely in silence! If you plan to bring a youth (or adult for that matter), consider whether that will work for them. The Quakers are so fascinating! Check out our local group’s website at Flagstaff Monthly Meeting | Quaker Cloud for a review of their beliefs. The description of the ways their beliefs need to be translated into action is truly inspiring. ALSO, in the section titled History of the Flagstaff Friends Meeting note that: In the 1950s and early 1960s, a small group of Quakers met with a small group of “strong Unitarians" until the Quakers grew large enough to form a meeting of their own. Wow!
For the rest of 2023, our schedule looks like this:
December 10, 2023: At 10 a.m., join us for Mass at San Francisco de Asis Roman Catholic Church, 1600 E. Route 66, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. This will be the 2nd Sunday of Advent in preparation for Christmas. The youth director has provided us with a "guide to Mass attendance for beginners" if you are interested in a copy.

CALLING ALL FACILITATORS! Would you like to lead an Adult Education program?Bring it On! Contact Lynda Dorweiler (Beacon President) to discuss your idea and scheduling possibilities.

SHARE YOUR JOYS AND SORROWS - CHIME IN!
One way we can sustain connection is by sharing our personal joys and sorrows. These can be small things or large things that effect your life. These are spoken during service every Sunday, or you can send them to office@beaconuu.com to be shared.
| |
|
JOYS AND SORROWS FROM NOVEMBER 5TH:
Joan S. shared her concerns about the war waged by Israel in Gaza: "So tragic."
Becky shared that her son is awaiting the judge's ruling. She is hopeful.
Maryann is worried about Ukraine.

BEACON UU JUKEBOX JAM SESSION/SINGALONG
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH FROM 3 TO 4 P.M.
| |
|

This time we'll be featuring jukebox hits.
We are hoping to have more gatherings. If you can’t make this one, please email Kim Angelo to let her know that you are interested.

CHEAP LUNCH BUNCH
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH AT 11:30 A.M.
| |
|
The Cheap Lunch Bunch will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24th at Beacon.
Please plan on doing a bag lunch on the second Tuesday of each month and then having lunch at a local restaurant on the fourth Tuesday. Doing this at standardized times should make it easier on everyone's calendars, and only doing a restaurant once a month should make it easier on our pockets.
To opine on the time and location of future gatherings and to be included in all the group's emails, please email Anne at wittke.anne@gmail.com.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2023 SHARE THE PLATE PARTNER
Beacon’s community partner for October - December 2023 is
THE FLAGSTAFF FAMILY FOOD CENTER
For October-December 2023, Beacon UU is sharing the plate with Flagstaff Family Food Center. Serving around 63,000 daily meals per year in their location on North Second Street, the Center also provides a children’s reading room, delivers to the Flagstaff Shelter Services an evening meal for those who might be staying the night, and provides Back Door and Mobile Sack Lunches. They have a food rescue program from local grocery stores and distribute food no longer good for human consumption to local farms and ranches so there is zero waste.
Undesignated contributions in this quarter’s offerings above $300 will be presented to the Flagstaff Family Food Center. Nominations for 501c3 agencies can be made through a form located in the Beacon office.
CAC members are Katy Grant, Susan Patrick, and Lynda L. Dorweiler.

GIFTING SECURITIES TO BEACON
If you have securities held outside of a retirement account (i.e., not from your IRA, 401k, 403b, TSP, or other retirement account) and are interested in gifting some to Beacon, more information can be found here. This can be a tax-efficient way to make a gift to Beacon.

LEGACY GIVING TIP – DID YOU KNOW?
You don’t have to confess your age, but if you are 72 or older, you may be required to pay federal taxes on the RMDs, “required minimum distributions,” that you now must take from certain types of your invested retirement funds. Did you know that you may be able to reduce your tax bill by contributing to Beacon’s stewardship campaign or to Beacon’s new Endowment Fund? See your tax consultant for more specific individual advice about whether you could benefit both Beacon and yourself by adopting this tax strategy.

EVERYDAY WAYS TO SUPPORT BEACON
|
1. If you shop at all at Fry's grocery, you can either sign up for your own VIP account (identifying Beacon UUC FE392 as your beneficiary) or use the church phone number (928-779-4492) to get any available discounts AND earn some money for Beacon. Currently, there are 8 households signed up, and Beacon earned $15.30 for this quarter.
If you want to take advantage of Fry's gasoline discounts, you'll want your own VIP account. You can create or edit an existing individual account at www.frysfood.com/account/create/ (Alt ID is typically your phone number.) Within your account settings, just click on Community Rewards and search for FE392 (Flagstaff's Beacon UU) to set Beacon as your beneficiary.
2. You can order from any of the over 2,300 stores listed under iGive with a portion of your purchase being donated to Beacon. After creating your own account with a user name and password, select settings and "my cause" and type in Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation (do not abbreviate UU).
3. Basha's has a special debit card that you can charge up before shopping, and a portion of what goes through the debit card gets donated to Beacon because that card is tied to Beacon. Ask Anne Wittke for further information.
Have other ideas for our income incubator? Please leave them on a card in the bin in the lobby, or send them to Lynda Dorweiler, President.
