Earth Day Outreach

By Madeline Ferber

Happy Earth Day! Come visit the NRC team on 4/20 in Lincoln, or 4/27 in Omaha.

After a rousing success last year with our Lincoln Earth Day clothing swap, the Nebraska Recycling Council is giving it another round. This year the swap will be even bigger and better, with clothing menders and vendors available as well. Does your wardrobe need a refresh? This will be the perfect opportunity to swap, shop, AND repair!

Not only will NRC be celebrating Earth Day in Lincoln with our second annual clothing swap, we’re also tackling kid’s education in Omaha! Come check out our booth on 4/27 at the Omaha Earth Day kid’s pavilion, where we’ll have family friendly games and education, and not one, not two, but THREE raffles for amazing recycling prizes!

Volunteers are needed!

We're in need of a few extra helping hands for the Lincoln Earth Day Clothing Swap. Volunteers can sign up for a morning or afternoon shift to help with set up and take down of the swap (racks, tables, clothing, etc.), sorting and hanging clothing, and accepting or rejecting items for the swap.

State of Nebraska Updates

By Haley Nolde

LB 1413: The proposed transfer of over several million dollars from The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Waste and Litter Grant funds to the General Fund has been removed from LB 1413.  However, the funds are set to terminate September 30, 2025, unless legislation is introduced to extend the sunset date.

State Climate Action Plan: The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy released the Priority Climate Action Plan. This plan was submitted to the EPA as part of the funding requirements. In the waste section, the PCAP focuses on food waste reduction incentives, biochar, and anaerobic digestion of ag waste. Download the final copy here.

Have you received a Recycling Equipment Grant?

By Allison Majerus

The Nebraska Recycling Council is in the process of reviewing our recycling equipment grant program as a whole and would love to get insight and feedback from current and past awardees. If you are a past or current recycling equipment grantee and are willing to assist us by providing feedback in streamlining the application, reimbursement and post-award process, please contact Allison Majerus at amajerus@nrcne.org. Thank you!

Rescue & Reuse: A recycling/rehome event for durable medical equipment

By Allison Majerus

We are hosting two Rescue & Reuse events (durable medical equipment collection/rehome events) this summer in Lincoln and Scottsbluff! The objective of these events is twofold: 1) recycle/rehome durable medical equipment diverting it from the landfill and 2) assist persons with disabilities and their families by providing an accessible and cost-effective option to recycle/rehome.

Lincoln:

  • Drop-off equipment you no longer need or use from July 22-26 at the Assistive Technology Partnership, 2301 NW 12th Street, Lincoln, NE
  • Attend the Disability Pride Event  at Antelope Park on July 27 and find equipment to take home

Scottsbluff: Event location TBA soon!

  • Drop-off equipment you no longer need or use from August 8-9
  • Come to our Rehome event August 10 and find equipment to take home

We will collect equipment like manual wheelchairs, powerchairs, walkers, and lifts, diverting them from the landfill and assisting the local community. We will host events in Kearney and Omaha in Spring 2025.

If you have questions, please reach out to Program Director Allison Majerus at amajerus@nrcne.org.

We’d like to thank the Nebraska Environmental Trust for their grant support of this program. We are also thankful for our program partners!
