NGCP Webinar Google-Gallup CS Education Data: Further Explorations of Underserved Communities
August 15, 2017; 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Pacific (2:00 - 3:00 PM Eastern)
 To understand the landscape of computer science (CS) education, Google and Gallup have surveyed 16,000 students, parents, teachers, principals, and superintendents across the U.S. each year for two years. In this webinar, they will share further insights into underserved communities, including new data on those in rural  areas and small towns, as well as insights on girls, Black students, and Hispanic students. With this data, they hope educators and advocates can realize the unique circumstances of these groups and better serve their needs for equitable CS education.

 CryptoClub Leader Trainings
The NGCP is hosting CryptoClub Leader Trainings in Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, and West Virginia this summer. You are invited to attend a professional development experience in a state near you. Club Leaders will receive training for the curriculum, materials for implementing, and access to online resources as well as an active community of practice.  Design Squad Global (DSG)
Announcing new dates for DSG Clubs, where kids (age 9-13) in afterschool programs around the world connect through hands-on engineering projects designed to tackle real-world problems. This summer DSG clubs registered through the NGCP from Maine, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wyoming, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oregon, and Paraguay will be partnering with DSG clubs from around the globe to work together on engineering projects that make a difference in their communities! Register your youth program to participate in the next round of clubs launching Fall 2017.

SciGirls STEM training hosted by Concordia University Chicago
River Forest, IL; August 12, 2017
Based on the Emmy-award winning PBS KIDS television series SciGirls, educators who work with middle and high school girls are invited to participate in this hands-on, minds-on professional development training. Attendees will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities, leave with curriculum that puts a creative twist on teaching STEM, learn how to modify activities to engage kids in STEM using the SciGirls Seven and discover additional online resources that enhance teaching and learning experiences for all kids. Isha Renta
|
Meet
Isha Renta. Isha graduated with a master's degree in atmospheric sciences and is currently a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Weather Service. She is also a Latina SciGirls role model. Her interests in meteorology goes back to 1989, when Hurricane Hugo moved over Puerto Rico and left extensive damage over the island. Images from the storm and its devastation initiated her fascination with meteorology. In her spare time she enjoys organizing weather and climate-related outreach events, mentoring high school and undergraduate students, and spending time with her family.

Westminster, CO; June 12-14, 2017
This year's theme is "Creating the Mindset for Action" and will inspire attendees to take action and make real progress in advancing cultural change and responsibility within their own organizations and institutions. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with diversity and inclusion advocates, and learn research based best-practices related to gender equity and inclusion in engineering.

CSTA 2017 is a professional development opportunity for computer science teachers and others who wish to include computing in their teaching. Participants will have the opportunity to learn, network, and build community while exploring issues and trends relating directly to the classroom.

National Making Week is June 16-22, 2017. Hosted by
Nation of Makers, the week is designed to highlight the diversity of makers big and small, young and old, urban and rural. This month we are turning The Connectory Spotlight on three great Maker/DIY opportunities this summer.
3D Printing & Engineering Camp: Using Computer Automated
 Design (CAD) and industrial design processes, students will design a solution from scratch, 3D model it, test their idea, and refine it through multiple iterations. When satisfied, they will use a 3D printer and watch the object get created.
Design Camp Summer 2017: Fashion, Engineering, and 3D Printing: Teens will spend time brainstorming ideas, sketching, turning those sketches into 3D models, and then using sewing and 3D printing to bring designs to life. Weekly themes range from jewelry design to wearable tech to industrial design.
Eugene Mini Maker Faire: Meet makers, hackers, artists,
 hobbyists, and do-it-yourself enthusiasts of all stripes ready to share their experiments and projects. With robots, rockets, arts and crafts, 3D printers, and even lasers, there's something amazing around every corner!

 Girls Who Code Clubs
Girls Who Code clubs are free afterschool programs designed for 6-12th grade girls to explore coding in a fun and friendly environment.
Clubs are typically hosted in schools, colleges, libraries, and community centers during the academic year. Start-up is simple and requires identifying space, computers and internet for each club student, and a facilitator to lead the club and communicate with Girls Who Code.
June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month
This month is a good time to explore your local zoo and aquarium. The
Association of Zoos and Aquariums provides a collection of links. Many of the websites have educational resources such as videos, wild life facts, lesson plans, and activities.
Maker Ed
Maker Ed provides educators and institutions with the training, resources, and community of support they need to create engaging, inclusive, and motivating learning experiences through maker-centered education. They work to make it possible for every educator in America (particularly those in underserved communities) to facilitate interactive, student-driven, and open-ended learning experiences for youth.
Tapestry Workshop-in-a-Box
This
resource from NCWIT contains materials for organizing professional development workshops that train high school educators in research-based, field-tested ways to attract and retain more and diverse students to computing courses.

World Oceans Day is a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. This year's theme is "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet". Organizations and individuals around the world are promoting prevention of plastic ocean pollution with events in their communities.
