Message from the Chair, David Layland
Welcome to the July edition of Napa Local Food.
Recently Anna Norton, Deputy Ag Commissioner, and I attended the 2nd Annual North Bay Food Policy Council Convening. This was a gathering of members of food policy councils from Napa, Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties and local food system advocates. The morning session focused on a presentation on the findings of a three year
UC ANR study of Food Policy Councils in California which was followed by a panel discussion that included representatives from each county. The afternoon session focused on topics of interest provided by the attendees. The convening was led by Julia Van Soelen Kim, UCCE North Bay Food Systems Advisor.
For me the major takeaway from the convening was that Napa has the same concerns as other counties and these include access to healthy food and food waste reduction and recovery. If you are interested in learning more about the convening please try to attend the next LFAC meeting on July 23.
Events of interest in July include the following:
- Live Healthy Napa County Quarterly Collaborator Meeting - Monday, July 9 - 1:30pm to 4:30pm
- Farm-to-School Summer Gala - Sunday, July 29 – 4:00pm to 10:00pm
You can find more information on these events and others by going to the calendar on the Napa Local Food
website.

Live Healthy Napa County Quarterly Collaborator Meeting 7/9/18
1:30 - 4:30 pm
|
At this meeting we will share the findings from the Napa County Emergency Food System study, a user-centered study funded by St. Joseph Health Queen of the Valley, Kaiser Permanente, The Gasser Foundation, and HHSA. Over the past 5 months many organizations and individuals have helped to collect data from eligible users and non-users of the emergency food system (i.e. cash aid, free/reduced cost prepared meals and bulk food), with the ultimate goal of providing a blueprint for ending food insecurity in Napa County. The July 9th meeting will be devoted to exploring the barriers to food access that have emerged from this study, as well as to brainstorming and beginning to prioritize potential solutions. We will welcome back our consultants from the Public Health Institute to help lead us through this process.
