TIFTON'S LPGA PRO STEPPING ASIDE
NANCI BOWEN'S LAST CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY
After 16 years of hosting the annual golf tournament to benefit hospice and cancer patients of Tift Regional Medical Center, Tifton native and retired LPGA golf pro Nanci Bowen says this year's event on Monday, May 11, will be the last in which she is actively involved.

the past," Bowen said. "That's why I first became involved with this event back in 2000. But after these many years, I am passing the torch."
The Nanci Bowen Charity Event is Monday at the Spring Hill Country Club. Folks may enter as a player, may form a team or may sign-up as a corporate sponsor.
"Nanci is very engaged in the tournament and is interactive with all the players," says Joy Davis, TRMC community relations coordinator. "Louise Woodham, TRMC director of patient relations, serves as our event chairperson and does a great job each year spearheading the tournament. This year is bittersweet because it is the last time Nanci will be participating, but we will carry on with this annual tradition that she has started. It's a great event for a great cause."
Bowen is a retired Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour player. Originally from Tifton, she attended the University of Georgia on a full golf scholarship and joined the LPGA immediately after graduating in 1989 with an undergraduate degree in public relations.
Her professional golf career was highlighted in 1995 with a win at the Nabisco Dinah Shore, one of the LPGA's four major championships. Other notable achievements included two runner-up finishes in 1997 at the Rochester International and the Susan G. Komen International, plus numerous top 10 finishes at LPGA tournaments between 1994 and 2005.
For 16 years, Bowen not only competed but was involved in the business operations of the LPGA Tour organization, including serving on its board of directors. She was elected to the executive committee in 1999 and served as vice president in 2001. She still serves on the organization's Dolores Hope LPGA Financial Assistance Initiative Committee. She will be inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame class of 2016.

ABAC HAS MOST GRADS EVER
More students than at any TIME in the 107-year history of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College graduated during the annual spring commencement ceremony Thursday in Gressette Gymnasium.
ABAC President David Bridges said a record-breaking 409 students completed requirements for graduation. More than 300 participated in the ceremony.
A total of 117 graduates received bachelor's degrees, shattering the previous high of 67. The Stafford School of Business also set a record by awarding 24 bachelor's degrees in business and economic development.
"We're rolling now," said Dill Driscoll, dean of the Stafford School of Business along with his wife, Susan. "I believe that number will go up significantly in years to come."
Dr. Beverly Sparks, an ABAC alumnus from the Class of '76, was guest speaker. She offered a message of encouragement and hope: "Your ABAC education will open doors and provide countless opportunities for your careers," said Sparks, recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Two of the graduates, Allison Faye Gordy from Sharpsburg, and Samuel Elberto Peraza from Loganville, were spotlighted for the top awards presented by the ABAC Alumni Association. Gordy, a natural resource management major specializing in wildlife, was named winner of the ABAC Alumni Association Award for the top bachelor's degree graduate participating in the ceremony; Peraza, a journalism major, received the George P. Donaldson Award for the top associate degree graduate.

COMMUNITY GARDEN DEDICATION IS SATURDAY
The dedication and planting of the North Central Avenue Community Garden will be from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday May 9.
The garden is located on Central Avenue between 14th and 16th streets in Tifton.
Following the dedication, there will be an opportunity to meet other gardeners and begin working in the garden. Food and fellowship will be provided.

CHAMBER'S TAL:K LEADER CLASS GRADUATES
The Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce's 2015 TAL:K (Tomorrow's Aspiring Leaders: Kids) Youth Leadership Class held its graduation ceremony Tuesday, May 5, at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. The class of 50 eighth graders from Eighth Street Middle School and Tiftarea Academy participated in several projects throughout the school year with an emphasis on leadership. The program was sponsored by Colquitt EMC, First Community Bank, Georgia Power, Heatcraft, South Georgia Banking Co. and Tift Regional Medical Center. |
