May 2024 | Vol. 27 Issue 5 - Celebrating 27 years of serving Water Utilities

Potable Water Divers

Since 1997 Ron Perrin Water Technologies,, Inc. has been proud to serve the water utility industry. We offer three different inspections of water storage tanks and towers to meet your needs: 1. Our underwater remote video and lighting system allows you to get a good look at your tank both above and below the waterline; 2. Our remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are equipped to swim to the back of the tank to acquire more information; 3. Diver inspections are available to look at specific areas for the most detailed inspection. All of our inspections include photos of all AWWA and State required inspection points and a narrated video showing interior conditions. Please give us a call for a free proposal: 817-377-4899 or toll-free at 888-481-1768.

Water Tank Inspections

Our inspections are the best in the industry, documenting all state-required inspection points. We use an underwater camera and lighting system so you know what is going on inside your tank. This allows you to make the best decisions possible. See:

Tank Inspection Page.

Potable Water Dive Crew
Our potable water dive team can keep your tanks clean with no disruption in service and minimal water loss. When sediment has been removed the habitat that allows bacteria and other contaminants to thrive in your tank is also gone. This allows the disinfectants, like chlorine, to do a much more effective job. Our customers report to us that they use less chlorine to meet standards after their tanks are cleaned.

Naegleria fowleri — Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) — Amebic Encephalitis in Drinking Water

Keeping your tank clean removes the sediment in the bottom that can be a safe habitat for an ameba like Naegleria fowleri and other more common microbes such has bacteria, protozoa and even viruses. In a clean tank Chlorine is much more effective and can can stop contaminants from getting a foothold in your tank and growing.

Our customers also report they use less chlorine to meet standards after we clean their tanks.

We have put together great videos from our dive crew that you will want to see.

Is there a STANDPIPE in your water system? Our underwater cameras make quick work out of inspecting it. We can get a look all the way down to the bottom!

We also have the perfect tool to clean it! Wallie is our ROBOT Standpipe Cleaner for tanks over 70 feet deep.
These structures present many problems for our potable water dive crew. Wallie is able to work at depth until the tank is clean. He is equipped with two cameras and a cleaning tip so he can not only clean the tank but get great documentation as he goes.
See our Wallie video: Click Here
At Ron Perrin Water Technologies, Inc. we use underwater cameras to perform water tank and tower inspections. This gives you a look at what is really going inside your storage facilities with no disruption in service and no water loss. If your tanks do need to be cleaned we can deploy a potable water dive crew that can make quick work out of tank cleaning by removing the sediment with minimal water loss. When sediment is removed from water storage all contaminants including microbes and pathogens that have been using that sediment for a safe habitat are also removed. Our crew can keep your system safe. We continue to keep our crew safe by putting safety first, providing the right equipment, and allowing our people to have the time they need to do a job completely and without being rushed.

Naegleria fowleri in Tap Water

Most Naegleria fowleri infections are associated with swimming in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. However, very rarely, Naegleria fowleri has caused deaths associated with tap or faucet water going up the nose . Naegleria fowleri can grow in public and private water tanks and pipes, especially where little or no disinfectant (like chlorine or chloramine) is present. It can also grow in the pipes and water heaters of homes and buildings. Naegleria fowleri infections have been reported when people put their heads underwater, rinse their sinuses through the nose, and cleanse their noses during religious practices using contaminated tap or faucet water. Visit the pages below to learn how you and your water utility company can protect your health.

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living ameba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a disease of the central nervous system.12 PAM is a rare disease* that is almost always fatal. In the United States,** there have been 157 PAM infections from 1962 through 2022 with only four survivors. These infections have primarily occurred in southern-tier states, with almost half of all infections occurring in Texas and Florida. PAM also disproportionately affects males and children. The reason for this distribution pattern is unclear but may reflect the types of water activities (such as diving or watersports) that might be more common among young boys.

Seven infections in the United States have been associated with water from drinking water systems. In these cases, people got infected from swimming, using a slip-n-slide, putting their head underwater in a bathtub, using a neti pot for nasal irrigation, or performing ritual nasal rinsing or ablution. PAM infections also occurred in the 1970s and 1980s in Australia 910 that were linked to showering, swimming, or having other nasal exposure to contaminated drinking water. The infections were linked to piping drinking water overland, sometimes for hundreds of kilometers, which raised water temperatures, lowered disinfectant levels, and allowed Naegleria fowleri to grow and thrive. Several water systems in the states of Western Australia and South Australia continue to monitor regularly for Naegleria fowleri colonization in drinking water distribution systems 11. Infections from contaminated water used for religious practices have also been reported.
