The IDA Academy provides training for Industrial Development Agency (IDA) staff and executives on a variety of issues to help operate an IDA office more effectively, including best practices, tools, and public policy that impacts their authority and operation. The NYSEDC administers this program in partnership with its IDA members, state agencies, and other industry experts.

Dan Gunderson of Camoin Associates spoke about the role of IDAs in New York's economic development. "Now more than ever, New York State must change course and rally behind its economic developers. Last year, the southern states of the US spearheaded $200 billion in capital investments poised to create a quarter of a million new jobs. These states collectively contributed $10 trillion to the US GDP. Six Southern states combined now outpace the GDP of the entire Northeast." | See the full op-ed in the Buffalo News.

Industrial Development Agencies are too economically important to tinker with said Martin Cantor, director of the Long Island Center for Socio-Economic Policy and former Suffolk County economic development commissioner. | Read his full editorial at Long Island Business News.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Greene County $1.5 million to lead a Brownfields assessment with focus areas including the villages of Catskill and Tannersville, as well as the city of Hudson in Columbia County. The $1.5 million is to be shared among Greene County, Columbia Economic Development, and the Hunter Foundation. | Read more about the funding for Greene and Columbia here.

The City of Gloversville received $1 million in federal funds to assess and clean up brownfields, dead zones for development as a result of industrial pollution. Fulton County as a whole received $1.5 million in federal funding for brownfield cleanup. | The Daily Gazette has more.

The New York Power Authority is opening a first-of-its-kind electric grid and power systems laboratory. The Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy, or AGILe, will be a research center at the NY CREATES' Albany nanotech Complex that can host various simulations to help promote more sustainable power and the transition to clean energy across New York state and beyond. | Spectrum Local News has the story here.

Stacey Duncan, CEO of the Leadership Alliance and NYSEDC board member, discusses how Upstate New York communities are highlighting their unsurpassed quality of life, easy access to transportation systems, educated and talented workforce, and more. | See the piece in the New York Real Estate Journal.

New initiative works to bolster microelectronics and semiconductor industries in New York. Empire State Development (ESD) has announced the launch of the Upstate Defense Initiative.The initiative brings together ESD’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), CenterState CEO, the Griffiss Institute, FuzeHub, and Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families to support workforce development, bolster supply chains, and cultivate innovation and entrepreneurship in the state’s microelectronics and semiconductor industries. The initiative is funded through a $5 million award secured by NYSTAR. | Read more at the Central New York Business Journal.

The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency has granted preliminary approval for financial incentives supporting three new mixed-use developments, representing a total private investment of approximately $463.5 million. Among these projects is AMS Acquisitions‘ $306.7 million development at 18 North Broadway in Yonkers. The project will consist of two 25-story residential towers. | Read more here

Grants and Financial Assistance Programs for Agriculture


Joe Russo and Seth Browe from National Grid join Jay Matteson for the latest episode of his podcast, Jay Matteson's Rural America. National Grid recently released information about their "Prescription Agriculture Program" which provides important incentives for energy efficiency measures. National Grid offers many programs to assist farms and agribusinesses with energy projects.
