Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it. Ralph Marston

Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible. I think it's in my basement... let me go upstairs and check. M. C. Escher

Now is the time to check off that list of to do's that have been building up all winter. The one that is most important is not checking the equipment, shop, or roads, but to say thank you. It is too easy to get so focused on the tasks at hand that we forget how we got where we are.

Yes, hard work and sacrifice probably helped. Talent, training, and perseverance also played a part. We may even have had a little luck along the way. But most of us have had help on our journey. It may have been mentors showing us the path forward and putting us in new roles. There may be coworkers, friends, and family who encourage us to do more and be better. And even after we get into a leadership position, we know that those who work for us can make our job easier and can make us look good if we are all on the same page working together.

We cannot always provide the pay or benefits folks want or sometimes deserve. We sometimes have to ask people to do things they don't really want to do. We cannot get to every task on our list. But we can always say thank you to everyone along the way. A simple, sincere, thank you can make someone's day. I hope it makes yours.

Thank you!

Do You Tell Your Employees You Appreciate Them?

Can a leader give too much recognition? We know it may be possible, but we have not seen it happen. It is often helpful at the end of each day to ask yourself: “Who went above or beyond today? Who did more than was expected? Who made a helpful contribution?” Then, when names will come to mind — don’t hesitate to give the recognition in a way that is most meaningful to them.
