Dear NYOS Parents,

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of our Elementary administrators.

A Letter From our Nurse - Regarding Lice

lice

Dear NYOS Parents,

We are seeing an increase in Lice cases in Elementary schools. To help us prevent the spread further please check your child’s head if they are complaining of being itchy. This could be on their head or neck specifically. If your child is positive, they MUST start treatment within 24-72 hours and be NIT-FREE before they can return to school.

Here are some tips to prevent head lice at school/home:

  • Avoid head-to-head contact

This is the best way to share lice, so keep children from sitting shoulder-to-shoulder and crowded around devices.

  • Don't share personal items

This includes clothing like hats, scarves, and coats, as well as combs, brushes, towels, and headphones.

  • Pull back hair

Long hair can increase the risk of getting lice, but pulling it back can help reduce it.

  • Wash items

Machine wash and dry clothing, towels, and bed linens that someone with lice wore or used within two days of treatment. You can also soak combs and brushes in hot water (over 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.

  • Avoid contact with infested items

Don't lie down on beds, couches, or pillows that have been in contact with someone who has lice.

Please reach out to Nurse Maddy if you have any questions.

Reminder for Early Pick-Ups

Picking Up Your Student Early:

  • If you need to pick up your student early, please pick them up no later than 2:30 pm Monday - Thursday and 11:00 am Friday. If you arrive after 2:30 pm/11:00 am, you will need to wait in one of our regular dismissal lines to collect your student. This allows us to reduce front desk traffic at the end of the school day and ensures that we're able to focus on a safe and efficient dismissal.
  • If you are picking up your student early for an appointment, you can help NYOS by emailing the front desk ahead of time to let us know. Please email the front desk at reception@nyos.org and include the full name of your student, the time we can expect you, and what time we should have your student ready for pickup.
  • Please plan for a minimum of 15 minutes to pick up your student from our front desk. Many times we call students from other buildings. This means it can take some time to get your student with their belonging to the front office and we do not want you to be delayed.

Don't Forget Your FARMA-Free & Reduced Meal Application is Due by Next Week!

The Deadline to get your FARMA turned in is August 28th and is fast approaching!

Did you know that the more Free & Reduced-Price Meal applications a school receives, the more students can receive the breakfast or lunch needed for them to do well in school? School districts receive reimbursements and both state and federal funding based on the number of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Federal funding for NYOS depends on having an accurate count of all students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

Free and reduced-price meal applications are completely confidential. Your information will only be used to determine your child’s eligibility for school meal programs, and students who receive free and reduced-price meals are not identified.

We encourage all families to fill out our free & reduced-price meal application; even if you think you may not qualify. By filling out this application, you can help to ensure that your child will receive well-balanced breakfast and lunch meals throughout the school year. Please take just a little time to complete this form. Completed forms can be emailed to Operations at ops@nyos.org for approval.
