Dear NYOS Parents,
We are seeing an increase in Lice cases in Elementary schools. To help us prevent the spread further please check your child’s head if they are complaining of being itchy. This could be on their head or neck specifically. If your child is positive, they MUST start treatment within 24-72 hours and be NIT-FREE before they can return to school.
Here are some tips to prevent head lice at school/home:
- Avoid head-to-head contact
This is the best way to share lice, so keep children from sitting shoulder-to-shoulder and crowded around devices.
- Don't share personal items
This includes clothing like hats, scarves, and coats, as well as combs, brushes, towels, and headphones.
Long hair can increase the risk of getting lice, but pulling it back can help reduce it.
Machine wash and dry clothing, towels, and bed linens that someone with lice wore or used within two days of treatment. You can also soak combs and brushes in hot water (over 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.
- Avoid contact with infested items
Don't lie down on beds, couches, or pillows that have been in contact with someone who has lice.
Please reach out to Nurse Maddy if you have any questions.
