Since the release of Mayor de Blasio's OneNYC plan just over a month ago, NYC-EJA has been very busy. 

We mobilized for City Council's first commercial waste oversight hearing at the end of April -- a major step in the Transform Don't Trash coalition's waste reform campaign and a stated goal of the Mayor's OneNYC Plan. Next, in collaboration with UPROSE and ANHD, we organized a rally in support of industrial retention before the May 6th hearing on Industrial Land Use and Zoning Policy.

Commercial Waste Hearing
April 29th Rally & City Council Hearing

NYC-EJA and fellow members of the Transform Don't Trash coalition were proud to stand with environmental justice, labor, and community advocates on April 29th to expose the massive problems plaguing NYC's commercial waste industry.

 

Following the hearing two santitation workers who testified at City Council about problems in the commercial waste industry were fired for speaking out. Members of Transform Don't Trash coalition protested this outrageous firing & both workers were reinstated.

 

We urge Mayor de Blasio and the City Council to overhaul NYC's antiquated, exploitative commercial waste system -- it dehumanizes workers, wreaks environmental damage on low-income communities of color and exploits small businesses owned by immigrants largely unaware of protections like waste rate caps.

Industrial Policy Hearing
May 6th Rally & City Council Hearing

On May 6th, NYC-EJA, UPROSE, and ANHD organized a rally on the steps of City Hall to advocate for updated industrial policies that prioritize working class communities and industrial jobs. The threat of residential re-zonings paired with special permit approvals encouraging hotels and big box stores leads to real estate speculation  and displacement pressures in industrial communities. Industrial retention is critical to maintaining high-quality jobs for low-income New Yorkers. 

 

At the marathon 5 hour City Council hearing following the rally environmental justice groups, housing advocates, labor unions, local businesses, and allies testified about NYC's outdated industrial land use and zoning framework. As just one example of the industrial policy battles facing the City, NYC-EJA member UPROSE has raised concerns about a major development proposal by Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. 

 

From East New York, to Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, to Sunset Park, industrial re-zonings threaten to displace local residents and drive local manufacturers out of business. We need to protect the land zoned for industrial use in New York City and promote climate adaptation and local jobs!
