Dear Community Partners,

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a Minor (Level 1) Risk of Heat-Related Impacts for the City and County of San Francisco, with temperatures expected to hit a high of 81° over the next 2 days (Tuesday June 4, to Wednesday, June 5). Minor HeatRisk

will persist for the eastern side of the City through at least Sunday June 9.

The impacts from high heat are different across the City and this Minor level of HeatRisk affects primarily people who are sensitive to heat, especially when outdoors without effective cooling and/or enough hydration.

Temperatures indoors can be trapped at 10 degrees higher than outdoor temperatures and may last for 1-2 days following the heat event.

Also, San Francisco has micro-climate environments, and some areas may be warmer or cooler than other areas.

Please view the National Weather Service

HeatRisk map for neighborhood-specific forecasts.

What do I do now?

It is important to check on family members, friends, neighbors, staff, and clients to see if someone is suffering from heat related symptoms.

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know is having a medical emergency or showing signs of a heat stroke.

Older adults, infants, and people without access to air conditioning will likely be susceptible to heat related illnesses, which is a serious and immediate danger.

Please take the necessary precautions to mitigate your heat exposure.

Steps you can take to help lower the impact of higher temperatures for yourself, your staff, and the community:

  • Pull shades down during the day and keep windows open at night.
  • Practice and share “Window Safety” messages to protect toddlers and small children from falls.
  • Drink water to stay hydrated. Avoid drinking alcohol and sugared drinks.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
  • If outdoors, stay in shaded areas and wear light-colored, lightweight clothing and a hat.
  • Practice water safety during heat events, particularly in coastal areas.
