Greetings!

Let's Have a September to Remember!!

It is only September but already we have begun a fall term full of events and activities! Kick-Offs are done! Open Houses are completed! College Corners have commenced! And the NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs have also held their first event with the remaining events occurring in the next few weeks! Plus we have National GEAR UP Week to celebrate as well! The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time! It's going to be a great term!!

Kick Offs!

It's official! It's Year 5! Year 5 started off with lots of exciting Kick Off events!! The new school year began in August and each of our schools held their annual fall kickoffs hosted by Student Success Agency! Students were reminded about GEAR UP resources and learned more about what SSA offers them. From motivational stories to dance breaks to getting an agent, students had a great kickoff to the new school year!

NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs!!!

Once again, the NSHE team will be holding their introduction events, the NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs at each GEAR UP high School. The first event was at Mineral County High School earlier this week. The remaining events will be split between the last week of September and the second week in October. This schedule allows our northern FYCAs to do some Power Hours while in the south. This year, we have been able to expand our guests to include a representative for the Native American Fee Waiver Program and the Treasurer's Office will also be attending all events, including Mineral County!!

NDE Fall Training Recap

Back in August, the GEAR UP NV grant team assembled in Reno for the NDE Fall Training Session. Everyone from across the state got together for our semi-annual staff training! Located on UNR’s beautiful campus, the team spent time planning fall services, learning about new resources for students, touring the campus, and more! We are excited to host events for students and families this year, and look forward to seeing our program back in action!

Welcome Ana!

We are happy to announce that Ana Hernandez-Wong has joined the NSHE GEAR UP team as the Communications Specialist/Student Worker. Ana is a junior at UNR majoring in Political Science. Someday she hopes to become a prosecuting attorney. Until then, she will be hanging out with her friends and family as well as her dogs, watching movies, and of course, creating communications for our GEAR UP program!!

We are so happy to have you on the team, Ana!
