College Corners Resume in September!
Good News graphic
The weekly College Corners at all of the GEAR UP schools started up again in September but this time they will be held in person! As long as it is safe to do so, the GEAR UP College Coordinator and the First Year College Advisors in collaboration with the GEARUP Specialists at each school will be visiting on a weekly/rotating basis. It is a great opportunity for students to meet the college staff and have their college questions answered. In addition, from time to time, there will be special presentations, activities, and guest speakers.
Good-Bye Elizabeth! Hello Jairon!

We are sorry to see GBC First Year College Advisor, Elizabeth Duryea, leave the GEAR UP program but we are happy for her in her new role! Elizabeth will be staying on at GBC as the Dual Enrollment Coordinator. We suspect we will cross paths with her again in the future!
TMCC recently brought on their new First Year College Advisor, Jairon Castellanos Boteo. Jairon (the 'n' is silent) comes to us from Washoe County School District. Jairon was born in Guatemala but he grew up in Reno. He has earned both his bachelor's and master's in social work from UNR as well as a recent associate in theology from TMCC. He is a first generation college graduate and has prior experience working with GEAR UP, Upward Bound, TRiO, and similar programs at UNR.
Kick Off Week Complete!
The first week of the new grant year was very busy to say the least. HUGE shout out to all of our schools, staff, students and parents for their participation! Likewise to the Student Success Agency (SSA) for their enthusiastic and energetic presentations at all of the schools! We couldn't have done it without help from our GEAR UP Specialists and the many teachers that showed the presentations during their class times!

We really appreciate all of the effort used to spread the word on GEAR UP services. Year 3 is off to a great start!
Ooooops!
Correction Needed!

In the August issue of the Digest, we mistakenly printed an incorrect last name for the new GEAR UP Specialist at Durango High School, Donovan Stewart. We are so sorry for the error, Donovan!
