Nevada GEAR UP Digest
 October 2021
Greetings!
Hello October! There are so many things to look forward to this month. The weather finally starts to get cooler. Some parts of Nevada might actually see some snow! There is plenty of football to watch and the baseball season wraps up. Plus, it is the time for pumpkins and all the fun that Halloween brings! Those of us that work with high school students also know, it is officially college application and FASFA season!

Be on the lookout for announcements and events regarding college information, application, FASFA completion, and scholarship workshops as well as other events and activities! This is a very busy and exciting time! We look forward to all the fall season entails as we help our GEAR UP students with their plans beyond high school!

College Application Month and FAFSA Completion Season!!
It's that time of year again! The FASFA officially opened up this month. We have already held several FAFSA events and there are more planned in the coming weeks. Plus all of our NSHE institutions will be working with the Specialists and high school seniors on their college applications. There are many resources available to help students and parents navigate this sometimes confusing and challenging process. We look forward to helping students finish their applications and get them ready for life after high school!
Welcome New GEAR UP Staff!

Welcome Maxine Alex, our new GEAR UP Nevada State Director! We are so excited to have her come on board. Max recently moved to Schurz, NV from Olympia, Washington. She received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford. She is a first generation college student that believes in the transformative power of education. Be sure to read her blog to learn more about her and why GEAR UP is the perfect fit for her! You'll find the link at the top of the left hand column.
Madison Masching is the new First Year College Advisor at Great Basin College. Madison is originally from Dayton, NV but graduated from Pahrump Valley High School. She is now back in Pahrump, after graduating from UNR where she received her bachelor's degree with a double major in psychology and criminal justice. During college Madison also developed a passion for teaching. Madison is excited to be working with GEAR UP students and giving back to her community.
Amanda Tapia is a new GEAR UP Specialist at Bonanza High School. Amanda was born and raised in Las Vegas. She attended UNLV for college and has worked with Clark County School District since graduating. Amanda recently graduated with her master's in school counseling from Touro University. She is very excited to be working with GEAR UP where she can focus on college and career counseling.

We are so happy to welcome all of our new team members!
National GEAR UP Week Celebrated with NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs!
What an awesome way to celebrate National GEAR UP Week! During the week of September 20th, an NSHE College and Scholarship Fair was held at each GEAR UP high school. It was so nice to meet all of our GEAR UP colleagues and students! In addition to tables for each NSHE college, we also had guests from Nevada Promise, the Nevada Treasurer's Office, financial aid offices, and NSHE Apprenticeships. The students were just as excited as we were! All together, we had about 600 students attend!
Nevada Well Represented at GEAR UP West!

The Nevada GEAR UP team took over Billings, Montana earlier this week for the 2021 GEAR UP West Conference! We had 14 representatives attend, including our new director from the Nevada Department of Education, 5 Specialists and 2 Facilitators from Clark County School District, 4 First-Year College Advisors and our College Coordinator from the Nevada System of Higher Education, and Dean's Future Scholars (DFS). The Nevada GEAR UP team was engaged in sessions learning about virtual services, summer programming, student and family engagement, STEM, game-based learning, and more. Huge shout out to DFS Assistant Director Manuel Ortiz and Principal Investigator Dr. Jafeth Sanchez! Manny had a great presentation during the conference about the Dean's Future Scholars Program and its significant impact on both student participants and staff over the last 21 years, especially with the program's collaboration with Nevada GEAR UP. Overall, the 3-day conference resulted in a lot of learning and bonding for the Nevada GEAR UP team. We can't wait for the next opportunity!
