Nevada GEAR UP Digest
November 2021
Greetings!
WELCOMING A SEASON OF GRATITUDE!
Happy November! We cannot believe it is already approaching the end of the year! The last few months have been very busy with FAFSA season, scholarship deadlines, college applications, campus visits, and so much more! The holidays and winter break will be here before we know it too! Even though it is a very busy time, it is good to take a moment to think about what we are thankful for every day. For us, we are grateful for the GEAR UP program, our colleagues, students, and families!

The last two months of the year are always the busiest. See below for some of the fun activities that have been hosted. Stay tuned for all the amazing opportunities planned for the coming months! Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Pahrump Valley High School Students Attend Southern Nevada College Week and Visit the UNLV Campus!
Recently, 41 junior and senior students from PVHS were able to attend the WACAC College Fair that is part of the Southern Nevada College Week. This fair, held at The Expo World Market Center in Las Vegas, hosted nearly 100 colleges from all over the country. Students were able to meet with college representatives, ask questions, and get information.

In another trip to Las Vegas, a group of 39 students were given a tour of the beautiful UNLV campus! Students from all grade levels participated in this event. The students were very interested in seeing and hearing about college life. They were particularly impressed with the new Hospitality Building with it's rooftop deck that has a panoramic view of the iconic Las Vegas strip!
SLOOH Launched at Durango!

Our GEAR UP program has been gifted with access for a large number of teachers and students to be able to have a Slooh account and access to all that entails. Slooh is an astronomy organization that runs telescopes around the world. Not only can students control these telescopes but they can also take images and schedule "missions". There are a variety of learning quests too. In addition, Slooh has a representative, John Boisvert, located right in Las Vegas. He is available for professional development opportunities for school faculty. Fortunately, this collaboration with Slooh happens at a time when Durango High School launched its Space Force ROTC program. This a brand new nation-wide effort that is only in 10 schools around the country! This will be an amazing partnership!

Look for additional information in the coming weeks so we can get many more GEAR UP students access to these Slooh accounts. For more information, contact Janet Stake, jstake@nshe.nevada.edu.
