Greetings!

Welcome to May!

Well, we made it! The light at the end of the school year tunnel should be shining brightly! If they haven't happened already, all our graduation ceremonies should be held soon! Graduations are truly a joyous occasion. It is so nice to be a part of and share someone's happiness while watching so many GEAR UP students reach this milestone. It is just as exciting for all the other students and families as well as they continue on in their educational journey and look forward to the next grade. We are looking forward to the next school/grant year too! Planning for the fall has already begun! It's going to be a great year!

Summer STEM Programs!

We are very excited to be providing access to two different summer STEM programs this year. For our rural school districts, we are working with MAD-Learn, a mobile app development platform that teaches students how to create an app. MAD-Learn is a national partner with NCCEP and was involved with the development of the STEM Toolkit. They will be doing a one-day camp at both PVHS and MCHS next week for up to 25 students at each location! Then for our CCSD schools, we will be providing for up to 20 students to take a module of the upcoming UNLV Summer STEM Camp in July. This camp has been run for several years. They offer topics that appeal to many students such as coding, cyber security and others.

NCCEP National Conference Registration is OPEN!

It is that time of year again! For those of you that are planning on attending the NCCEP National Conference in July, registration is OPEN!! This year the conference theme is The Power of Possibility. It will be held in San Francisco beginning on July 16th - 19th. Several members of the NVGU team are planning on attending. NSHE's Jana Burd will be presenting a session on the new STEM Toolkit! Early registration is happening now! Summer Bridge Programs Begin!!

We know we are coming to the end of the school year when we start holding our summer bridge programs! The high school programs are all being held this month! Last week, several NVGU team members were on hand joining GEAR UP Specialist, Kristy Bekiares and our friends from Paradigm Shift at Mineral County High School for two days of fun and learning about life after high school. Next week the programs will be held at Pahrump Valley High School on May 22nd and 23rd. Then each of our Clark County High Schools will hold their programs on the 24th and 25th. The three programs, sometimes referred to as "Adulting 101", will run concurrently. These summer bridge programs are open to all seniors whether they have applied to college or not.

For students that have applied to an NSHE institution, our First Year College Advisors will also be running bridge programs of their own on each of their campuses to introduce the college freshmen to helpful resources on campus as well as future GEAR UP activities.

Welcome Josh!!

Following the promotion of the former GEAR UP administrative assistant, Clare Cerda, to the role of program officer, we are happy to welcome Josh Loftis to the GEAR UP family as our new administrative assistant at NDE! Josh has worked previously for the state of Nevada at another agency. Josh remembers a few year ago, he worked with a GEAR UP group of students that participated in an event with his former unit! It's a small world!

We are so happy to have you join our team, Josh!!

Teck Trekkers!

We are happy to report that most of our schools participated in a Tech Trekker activity again this year! The Tech Trekkers are a group of engineering students from UNLV that provide hands-on activities to students in schools in southern Nevada. UNR's College of Engineering has a similar program and provided a similar activity for Mineral County High School too. This is the second year that we have been able to provide this opportunity to some of our high school classrooms. See more photos below!
