Yay for June!
By now, all of our schools and colleges are on summer break! Those of us still in the office will be wrapping up remaining services and reporting for the year. Most of us have started the process to prepare for Year 5 of our grant program. So even though our students are no longer in school, there is still plenty to do! As we reflect back on this last year, we have much to be proud of! As plans for the next grant year are created, we have much to look forward to as we continue to provide services to our students and families. Thank you to all the GEAR UP NV staff for your hard work toward the success of our program!!

Congratulations to Our Graduates!
It doesn't get much better than graduation! We spend so much time looking forward to it and then suddenly it is upon us. Congratulations to all of our graduates and thank you to our colleagues that help our students along that path!!
Summer Programs!
Each year, the UNLV College of Engineering holds a summer camp that emphasizes various STEM areas. A few years ago we were able to send a few students to the camp and we are doing it again this year! We have three students from Bonanza and six students from Durango signed up to take one or two of four amazing modules, Robotics, Cybersecurity, Python Programming and The Most Dangerous Math in the World!
ASPIRE and DFS programs include intensive summer programming as well. You can read more about ASPIRE's program to the right.
NCCEP National Conference Registration is OPEN!
There is still time to register! The NCCEP National Conference is in a few weeks! This year the conference theme is The Power of Possibility. It will be held in San Francisco beginning on July 16th - 19th. Several members of the NVGU team are planning on attending. NSHE's Jana Burd will be presenting a session on the new STEM Toolkit! Nicole Stella will also be leading a discussion lab on How Do We Help Students Explore STEM Careers and Education Pathways. For more information about the conference, or to register, visit: https://www.edpartnerships.org/annualhttps://www.edpartnerships.org/annualhttps://www.edpartnerships.org/annual
Spring Wrap-Up!
We have officially wrapped up all of our spring services for the school year! From CPR classes to campus visits, we offered a wide variety of services for our high school students across the state. We collaborated with our community partners to bring new and returning services to our students, like US Bank, US Attorney for Nevada, and UNLV Tech Trekkers. It has been so much fun with our annual college & career fairs, college corner drop-ins, and power hour presentations held throughout the year at each school - and we are already planning for next year! Stay tuned to find out what we have planned next!

We Did Some MAD Learning!!
On May 22nd and May 23rd, students at Mineral County High School and Pahrump Valley High School respectively, had the opportunity to spend the day with MAD-Learn, a web-based mobile app development company (and GEAR UP partner) that has a platform that allows students to experience the mobile app development lifecycle firsthand. Several students at each camp joined MAD-Learn instructor Gregg Stone for a chance to create their own mobile apps by working on a combination of computer work stations and their own mobile devices. The students performed well and their app ideas were diverse. For example, one student worked on a chess game while another created an app around her love of horseback riding and rodeos. The graphic above is a photo of a few of the actual apps the students created. Along the way, they all learned about basic coding and content creation as practiced in the professional world of tech development while progressing through a six-stage design process: ideate, plan, design, build, test, and launch. After a fun and engaging experience, the students will have the opportunity to continue working on their app ideas throughout the summer. For more information about the MAD-Learn curriculum, visit: www.mad-learn.com

Congratulations Donovan!!!
This is a very bittersweet announcement. Our GEAR UP Specialist at Durango High School, Donovan Stewart has accepted a new role as an assistant principal at Durango High School. While this is an amazing and well deserved opportunity for Donovan, we are sorry that he will no longer be working full time for GEAR UP. On the positive side, he is not going far away, so we can still see him from time-to-time.
Congratulations Donovan! We are very happy for you and wish you much success in your new position!!

Adulting 101 in 2023
May was a busy month as we ended the year! Our summer bridge events at each high school occurred, servicing our graduating seniors as they prepared for life after high school. Through our “Adulting 101” themed summer bridge services, students learn about money management, problem solving, time management, college readiness, and other life skills. Overall, students learned more about how they can take on their future with the resources and support provided to them. Although we are going to miss our seniors, we’re also excited for them to continue on to their next journey! Congratulations and good luck class of 2023!

UNLV ASPIRE kicks off summer programming!
We are excited to welcome our rising 10th & 11th grade ASPIRE students to UNLV this month! Students will live on campus and participate in field trips to Springs Preserve, the Kerkorian School of Medicine, and Roseman University. Students will also work on art and engineering projects and build up their college knowledge. ASPIRE has also been awarded $65,000 through UNLV Young Rebels and the Nevada First Gen Network to hold our first residential Summer Bridge for the Class of 2027. We'll bring 20 students from across CCSD to campus for a week and close with a full-day family conference! Look out for updates from our ASPIRE scholars this fall!
