Greetings!

We LOVE February!

It has been a little bit of a crazy winter in the state of Nevada. The north seems to be getting snow on a regular basis and the south is having freezing temperatures as well! No doubt the wet stuff is very much needed and now that it is February is upon us, there is a light approaching at the end of this unusual weather tunnel. As the last of the winter weather blows through, there is so much to love about this month and the upcoming spring season. The spring term is underway and so is spring planning! Check out some of our recent happenings and future efforts below!

College and Career Fairs

All of the dates for the upcoming spring College and Career Fairs are set. The first one will be held at Mineral County High School on Monday, March 13th. The southern events will be held between March 28th through the 31st. That schedule is:

-Tuesday, March 28th at Clark HS

-Wednesday, March 29th at PVHS

-Thursday, March 30th at Bonanza HS

-Friday, March 31st at Durango HS

The Specialists are busy organizing and filling tables for these large and very popular events! We are all excited and hope to see you there!

Summer Bridge Programs

We do have dates for the various Summer Bridge Programs. Planning is still in the works!

The schedule is:

May 9 & 10 - MCHS

May 22 & 23 - PVHS

May 24 & 25 - CCSD

ACT Bootcamps

Pahrump Valley High School held two 6-hour ACT Bootcamps on Saturday January 28th and February 4th. See the photos posted below! All of our GEAR UP schools will be hosting similar events to help students prepare for upcoming ACT testing.

Capacity Building Workshop Wrap-Up!

Today was the final day for NCCEP's annual Capacity Building Workshop. If you were lucky enough to attend then you know what an awesome program NCCEP put together. One major difference between this conference and other conferences is the longer times spent in the various sessions. Each day there were several topics scheduled that were offered in two parts for a total of two hours spent discussing, planning, and/or strategizing in key areas. Topics covered a plethora of GEAR UP related areas. There was something for every GEAR UP staff regardless of their specific role.

NDE Spring Staff Training!!

Along with NDE, the GEAR UP Nevada staff from all school districts and NSHE gathered at UNLV for two days filled with information, collaboration, and fun! First we were introduced to our new FYCA, Jody Uyanik, from GBC! We discovered our inner artistry, covered a lot of grant basics, were treated to two guest speakers from NDE's Office of Safe and Respectful Schools, were given a tour of the UNLV campus, and ate lunch at the UNLV dining commons. Lots of great information was shared. The team always appreciates the opportunity to spend time together as it doesn't happen very often.

UNR Bound Trip

In early February, we successfully held our second Nevada GEAR UP fly-up trip to the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) with over 50 students from across the state! Students from all five of our Nevada GEAR UP high schools traveled to Reno, Nevada to meet with UNR students & staff, learn about institution resources, tour the campus, and enjoy the new campus dining facility. At the end of the day, the UNR & Nevada GEAR UP teams facilitated a human bingo activity where all of our Nevada GEAR UP students had the opportunity to meet and connect with each other, sharing their experiences from the day. This entire Nevada Bound opportunity allowed Nevada GEAR UP students to preview what life could be like if they decided to attend UNR. Special thank you to UNR's AVP of Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising, Emilly Borthwick-Wong & her team, Nevada GEAR UP's Jana Burd, all of our high school teams and FYCAs from TMCC and WNC, as well as the UNR Las Vegas Office for making this successful event happen again for our students!

NCCEP STEM Toolkit Released!

We are very please to announce that NCCEP has released the new STEM Toolkit which was developed through a collaborative effort between NCCEP, national partners (MAD-Learn, Maker Ed, and Texas Instruments), and several members of various GEAR UP programs. You can now access all of the information and activities on the website at: https://www.edpartnerships.org/stem-toolkit. The collaborative effort, the STEM Discovery Lab, included three members of the GEAR UP Nevada team, Jana Burd, Nicole Stella, and Janet Stake. If you look closely, you can see all of them in the photo!
