In collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Las Vegas Office of Prospective Students, Nevada GEAR UP successfully coordinated an exclusive GEAR UP Nevada Bound trip on February 9, 2022! About 60 students traveled to Reno and met with college staff, listened to current UNR students, toured the campus, and enjoyed campus dining.
This opportunity allowed Nevada GEAR UP students to preview what life could be like if they decided to attend UNR. Our First Year College advisors from Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and Western Nevada College (WNC) also spoke to students about other postsecondary options available to students in northern Nevada. Special thank you to our GEAR UP Teams at Bonanza High School, Clark High School, Durango High School, Mineral County High School, UNR, TMCC, and WNC, as well as the UNR Las Vegas Office for making this successful event happen for our students! Check out @nvgearupccsd & @gearupnv on Instagram for some of the highlights!

Introducing ASPIRE Workshops!
This past weekend, ASPIRE welcomed students and their families to the first of three Saturday workshops. Attendees learned about SMART goals from ASPIRE tutors, participated in virtual scavenger hunts, and discussed types of colleges with Ms. Nicole. Each workshop will be a chance for families to learn more about college options and how to prepare for what comes next. ASPIRE scholars are encouraged to join us in person on Saturday, March 12 at UNLV for our next workshop! We'll be covering a variety of topics, including a tour of UNLV's campus!
Students are also welcome to join us for our weekly College & Career Workshops! Join ASPIRE tutors each Wednesday at 7 pm for college knowledge and STEM career information. More information is available in the ASPIRE Canvas class.

NDE Training in Reno!
On a cold morning at the end of January, the Nevada GEAR UP team met on the WNC campus for an all-day training provided by NDE. This was the first time everyone was able to meet in person since the grant program began as the pandemic took hold. The training included time with Student Success Agency which is always fun and informative. We were even treated to a song sung by SSA's Caroline!
There were a number of topics covered including FERPA, social media, and STEM to name a few. During the STEM portion, there was a tower building competition in which Donovan Stewart, Specialist from Durango HS and Tanya Smith, First Year College Advisor from NSC, took the prize!

Services Start in Mineral County!
|
Mineral County High School and Hawthorne Junior High School launched their GEAR UP services with an exciting kick off event featuring Student Success Agency!! If Student Success Agency was there, you know the students were having a good time!
In addition, the NSHE team started their regular rotation of College Corners and Power Hours. In the planning process is a College and Scholarship Fair to be held in the Mineral County High School gymnasium on Thursday, March 24th from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. This fair will mirror the fairs held in the south during National GEAR UP Week in September. In addition to the NSHE institutions, representatives from the Treasurer's Office, Promise Scholarship programs, apprenticeship programs, and financial aid have been invited to attend.
