And Just Like That, December is Here!!
December can be filled with joyful festivities and celebrations! It also marks the end for many things: autumn, the fall term, the tax year, and the whole year in general. For some, the time has likely gone by fast! For others, perhaps not fast enough. December is a great time to reflect on the past year. What was good, what was great, and what could have been better? This reflection gives us the opportunity to make changes to hopefully improve our experiences, our jobs, our lives, etc., in various areas. This is true for our GEAR UP program as well. As we reach the close of our Interim Reporting periods, now is the time to celebrate all of our accomplishments and consider positive changes for an even better spring term!
As the year comes to a close,
we hope you and your family enjoy the happiest of holiday seasons!
We'll see you in the new year!

Campus Visits and MORE!!
This semester brought a lot of off campus opportunities for our Nevada GEAR UP students! All five Nevada GEAR UP high schools were able to visit UNLV, where FYCA Kat had presenters from different offices share information and resources, student tour guides who showed our students around while giving history on the institution (shout out to Nevada GEAR UP alum Megan from PVHS that was a tour guide for most of our schools 😃), and of course lunch at the buffet-style dining commons. Most of our high schools were also able to tour CSN with FYCA Morgan, who collaborated with both the West Charleston and North Las Vegas campuses to provide the various campus visits. FYCAs Jairon and Tawnie also had Mineral County High School visit TMCC and WNC campuses respectively to show students around our institutions in the north. Our Specialists also brought students to other opportunities like visiting Nellis Air Force Base and Nevada State College to tour their facilities. It has been an eventful semester and we are so excited to find out where our students are going next!

Fall Wrap Up!
Our Nevada GEAR UP team has been extremely busy this semester! Aside from many different field trips off campus and evening FAFSA workshops, we have been able to do a lot of work on campus and in classrooms. Our Specialists were able to get into classrooms to give reminders about deadlines, complete workshops, and have students submit applications for colleges and financial aid. Our First-Year College Advisors were able to have weekly College Corner drop-in services and seasonal Power Hour presentations in our high schools, while also providing services to their GEAR UP first-year college students enrolled at their institution. Our team also collaborated with community partners to provide specific presentations and information, like the Cosmopolitan who hired students for jobs on-the-spot, Jalen Jones from the Vegas Golden Knights who shared about careers in media design and donated tickets to the games to our students, the Public Education Foundation who discussed their annual scholarships for hundreds of students throughout the state, our local career and trade schools that explained their opportunities for students, military branches that engaged and excited students with what they have to offer, and so much more! What an engaging semester we’ve had, and we are excited to see what next year brings!

Looking Forward to Spring!
|
While we have been wrapping up services for the fall, we are also gearing up for the spring (pun intended)! We have a new College Corner rotation planned as well as assorted Power Hours coming up. Campus visits will continue, including an exclusive GEAR UP trip to the UNR campus in Reno! ACT Bootcamps are in the works, Summer Bridge programs are being developed and we are very excited to once again offer the College and Career Fairs at each of our GEAR UP high schools. During the last week in March, the NSHE team will be in southern Nevada for the following events:
- Tuesday, March 28th - Clark HS
- Wednesday, March 29th - PVHS
- Thursday, March 30th - Bonanza HS
- Friday, March 31st - Durango HS
This event will also be offered at Mineral County High School but as of this writing, that date has not been confirmed.
