NSHE/FYCA Team Building Day
August 17th
As this issue of The Digest is hitting your inbox, the NSHE FYCA team will be wrapping up it's first of what we hope will become a semi-annual event, the FYCA Team Building Day! Scheduled to run adjacent to the NDE training, the FYCA team will have a chance to spend some time together, in-person, which is something that we do not get to do very often. We will be learning some new and exciting things as well as sharing the results of a recent Team Appreciation Exercise.

Welcome Back Class of 2026!!!
Special shout out this fall to the class of 2026! GEAR UP staff in Clark and Nye counties welcomed incoming 9th graders the week before classes began in early August to help prepare them for the first day of school. Students and parents got a sneak peak of what GEAR UP is and how we can support students and families at our GEAR UP schools. It was so fun to see everyone in person and we can’t wait for more during the GEAR UP kickoffs at the end of the month!
Speaking of the Kick Offs at each school, we are very excited that Student Success Agency will be there to lead the events and drum up student enthusiasm for the coming year! Kick Offs are our introductory events at each school, held in the way that is best for each individual school and it's student population. Currently, the schedule is as follows:
- PVHS: August 24th and 26th with Parent Night on the 24th
- MCHS: August 25th
- CCSD Parent Night: August 25th
- Bonanza: August 25th and 26th
- Clark: August 29th and 30th and September 1st and 2nd
- Durango: August 30th and 31st

We are pleased to welcome Tricia Martin to the GEAR UP Nevada family! Tricia joins us as the First Year College Advisor for Great Basin College. Tricia will be a familiar face to her students at Pahrump Valley High School. She was most recently a teacher there. The subject she taught was government. But now she is on the NSHE team and she will be assisting her PVHS students and all the students at the various GEAR UP high schools with college readiness and finding their desired postsecondary path.
We are so happy to have you on board, Tricia!!

Farewell Danielle!
Oh no! We are so sorry to say "good-bye" to Danielle Ford, GEAR UP Specialist at Bonanza High School. Danielle has been with GEAR UP since this grant cycle started. Danielle will still be with CCSD as a counselor but she is moving to a different high school. Unfortunately, that school is not a GEAR UP school.
Thank you for all your work on behalf of GEAR UP and our students and families!! We wish you the very best at your new school, Danielle! We'll miss you!

Conference Updates
The Nevada GEAR UP team had a great time at the 2022 Annual Conference in Washington, DC July 17-20, 2022! GEAR UP staff from NDE, NSHE, and CCSD attended sessions on various topics including data and evaluation, virtual programming, mentorship, and program branding and engagement. Keynote speakers discussed topics such as empathy, diversity and inclusion in STEM, equity in education, and important messages from the Youth Leadership Summit. The team also was able to network with professionals from both within and outside of the state – shout out to UNLV’s GEAR UP through CAEO – while reconnecting with our contracted partners Paradigm Shift and Student Success Agency. Overall, it was a successful conference on the east coast and we can’t wait to see many familiar faces at GEAR UP West in October!

NSHE Kick Off Events During National GEAR UP Week!
For the second year, the NSHE colleges will be holding their kick off events at each high school in the form of the NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs. Last year, the students really enjoyed meeting our staff at these events so we decided to do it again! Not only is this the introductory event for the NSHE colleges, it is also our way of celebrating National GEAR UP Week. National GEAR UP Week is celebrated at all GEAR UP programs throughout the country. Look for all of the NSHE GEAR UP staff at the end of September! Plus - we may have some special guests attending with us. Stay tuned!

UNLV's National Summer Transportation Institute Wraps Up!
This summer, UNLV hosted the 8th annual National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI), an intensive two-week program focused on engineering and transportation. Seven of our GEAR UP ASPIRE 10th grade students were accepted to this highly competitive program. Students stayed on campus for two weeks, learning from sponsors like Black Fire Innovation, The Boring Company, RTC, GoMed, and more. Students completed projects aimed at increasing pedestrian and driver safety in the UNLV medical center area in Las Vegas and presented to an audience that included Congresswoman Dina Titus, former UNLV Acting President Marta Meana, other key members of the transportation community, and the students' families and friends. We are thrilled to see our GEAR UP students already giving back to their community and engaging with state and national innovators.
