Greetings!

Welcome to April!

April is a lovely time of year in Nevada - not too hot/not too cold. Lots of spring flowers and trees blooming! OK, for some that may not be a great thing if pollen is a problem for you. But it is a great time for GEAR UP as we are very busy this time of year with plenty of services and activities for our students. We are coming into the last couple of months of the school year and as usual, we have a lot planned. Keep reading for our latest updates!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Southern Nevada College and Career Fairs - April 19-22

By the time this Digest is sent, we will be in the middle of this highly anticipated activity. Each GEAR UP high school in southern Nevada will host a College and Career Fair. Employers from around the area as well as all the NSHE colleges will be on hand to meet and greet GEAR UP students in the 8th - 12th grades.

Summer Bridge Programs - Dates Announced

This summer we have several summer bridge/transition programs planned. Below are the dates for the various district offerings:

Bonanza: May 31 & June 1

Clark: May 31 & June 1

Durango: May 26 & 27

CCSD Middle Schools: June 6 & 7

PVHS/RCMS: May 19 & 20

Mineral - high school and middle school: May 9 & 10

2022 NCCEP National Conference, Washington DC

July 17-20, 2022

This conference will be held in person in Washington, DC! If you have never been to the national conference, you won't want to miss it! Registration will be opening in May. NSHE Colleges Introduced to Hawthorne Students!

It was a beautiful day for a drive in Nevada! And that was a good thing because on Thursday, March 24th the entire NSHE crew along with NVGU State Director, Maxine Alex and Kyle Price from Paradigm Shift all descended on the Mineral County High School campus for a College and Scholarship Fair!

The students really seemed to enjoy the event. They were given a chance to talk to various representatives and have questions answered. All together we met with over one hundred 8th-12th grade students that day. Thanks to GEAR UP Specialist, Kristy Bekiares, who was able to get a number of students signed up for Strive Scan. This was the first time we used it and those that did use it found it very helpful.

Welcome Javier!

We have a new Assistant Director - Javier Smith! Javier recently joined the Nevada Department of Education bringing with him ten years of experience in student support services in higher education. Javier was formerly with the University of Arizona. He has earned a master's in organizational leadership with an emphasis in project management. We are happy to have you on the Nevada GEAR UP team, Javier!!

Farewell to Karen!

It will be hard to imagine GEAR UP with out our data enthusiast, Karen Pugh. At this time, Karen has decided to leave NDE and the GEAR UP grant to pursue other endeavors. Although we are sad to see her go, we are excited for her and wish her the best of luck with her future plans.

Student Success Agency at CCSD!

There was a lot of excitement at our Clark County schools with the return of Student Success Agency (SSA)!

Over the past month, Student Success Agency traveled to Las Vegas to present to our Clark County School District schools. SSA presenters Caroline Inspires Bennett and Hector Garcia spoke to approximately 2,000 GEAR UP high school students in CCSD, discussing how cooking is similar to success, sharing their own personal stories, and getting students signed up for the agency. For our 8th graders, Caroline discussed different types of goals and how to reach them, sharing with students the importance of mentoring and how SSA can assist them. We had a blast in the dozens of presentations this month and can’t wait for SSA to return in the fall for our annual kickoff presentations!

UNLV Tech Trekkers at Southern Nevada GEAR UP Schools!

Talk about exciting!! As part of the STEM Planning Committee plan, the UNLV Tech Trekkers program has been scheduled at each GEAR UP school in Southern Nevada. The first one was held at Bonanza on Friday, March 18th. The remaining events will be held throughout April and possibly into May. So far the students have enjoyed the activities.

Tech Trekkers is based out of the UNLV College of Engineering. They are a group of engineering students that will travel to schools and perform various hands-on, engineering related demonstrations and activities. For example, they may build a solar water heater. Each school gets to select an interesting activity for their students from a list of grade appropriate options. Many options are solar related which gives the students a chance to be outside in the Nevada sunshine!
