And just like that, it's April! We have a lot planned for the remaining weeks of the school year and a number of interesting summer options as well. UPCOMING EVENTS

NCCEP National Conference and a Nevada Presentation
Congratulations to Jana Burd, Andrea Saavedra, and Nicola Opfer from the NSHE GEAR UP team! They submitted a breakout session proposal to present at the national conference and it was accepted!! More info on that as we get closer to conference time.

The conference is scheduled for July 18-21, 2021. We still do not know if it will be virtual or in person. If it is in person, it will be held in San Francisco. Registration will be opening in April. The latest information can be found here.

Upcoming College Corners and Power Hours
In the coming weeks, we have several topical presentations planned during our regular College Corners and Power Hours. In addition to dual enrollment and study abroad information presented during regular College Corners, we will also have the following Power Hours planned presentations on Apprenticeships on April 27th with NSHE's Danielle Donato, Senior Learning Concierge and Cybersecurity on May 4th with NSHE's Chief Information Security Officer, Theresa Semmens. She will highlight what cybersecurity is and what careers are available in this growing field.

We have reserved the final Power Hour on May 11th for planning a year end celebration and recognition for our seniors! Stay tuned for more information.

8th and 12th Grade Transition/Summer Bridge Programming
Dates have been set for our programs for eighth graders transitioning into high school and 12th graders transitioning into college students. We will be partnering with Student Success Agency and Paradigm Shift to present these information and fun-filled events. In Nye County, both 8th and 12th grade bridge programming will be held on May 24th and 25th. In Clark County, the 12th grade transition programming will be held on May 27th and 28th. The Clark County 8th grade bridge program is scheduled for June 7th and 8th. Note: Due to the expansion of summer school this year, these dates may be subject to change. These programs have shown to be very important for students transitioning from one type of school to another and help them start off at the new school, prepared and ready to learn!

First Cohort of ASPIRE Scholars has been Selected!

We are very excited to announce that the first cohort of ASPIRE Scholars has been selected. There were 36 students from our middle schools chosen to participate. These students will receive tutoring and mentoring in STEM areas. In addition, they will participate in a six week summer program which will focus on STEM learning in many interesting and varied areas.

In the fall, we will be looking to increase the number of students participating in the program. In fact we hope to more than triple in size by opening applications to 7th and 8th graders. We will keep you posted as information is released. If you have any questions on the ASPIRE Scholars program, you may contact the program director, Nicole Stella at nicole.stella@unlv.edu .
We Will Miss You!
Recently, three GEAR UP colleagues announced their plans to move on to different positions. We are so sorry to see them go but we are so excited for them as they pursue new endeavors.

We have to say good-bye to Melissa Schroeder, the Nevada State GEAR UP Director. Melissa will be starting a new position with the US Department of Education! Not only are we happy for her new role, we are thrilled to have another GEAR UP advocate working at the federal level.
Our second departure is the Principal Investigator for the NSHE subaward, Nate Mackinnon. Nate will be leaving GEAR UP, NSHE, and Nevada to head back to Massachusetts where he will assume the role of Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of Community Colleges. Nate has been with GEAR UP as the PI since 2018.
Last but not least, TMCC First Year College Advisor, Mari Jimenez Ortiz will be moving over to the Upward Bound program at UNR as the Upward Bound Counselor. Mari has been with GEAR UP since 2012. As one of the longest serving staff members, GEAR UP just won't be the same without her. UNR and Upward Bound are lucky to have you Mari!
College Knowledge Video Series

Our team has worked hard this year to produce a number of useful video resources that have been shared on social media and posted on the GEARUPNV YouTube Channel. Our goal is to build and provide a resource for students and families that can be accessed at any time to provide basic college information and answer some questions. Adding to an already enhanced offering, in the coming weeks, we will be releasing new videos on NSHE institutions as well as general college knowledge topics such as college terminology, dual enrollment, scholarships, and more. One video you will not want to miss is the "What I Wish I Knew Before Going to College" featuring our FYCAs and their tips for starting off college life on the right foot.
