As the end of the school year approaches, we can look back over a year full of so many challenges for students, families, and staff. There were some positive things though too. For starters, this new grant was launched! ASPIRE has it's first cohort in place! We provided a lot of great programming! We've made new connections too! We are looking forward to great things next year and we hope that our students, families, staff, and supporters will join us on this journey!

Summer Bridge Programs for 8th and 12th Graders!
We have exciting programs planned for our incoming high school and college freshmen. Together with Paradigm Shift, our team has a lot of fun and informative sessions for students to learn about transitioning into their new school environment. Not only are transition or bridge programs a regular service through GEAR UP but programs such as these have shown to be very important for students transitioning from one type of school to another. They help reduce stress and ease the transition into the new school which helps students start off the new school year prepared and ready to learn!

Some of the exciting things planned are sessions on life skills, study skills, college introductions, college and career preparation, and more!!

The dates for each program are:

In Nye County, both 8th and 12th grade bridge programming will be held on May 24th and 25th at Pahrump Valley High School.

In Clark County, the 12th grade transition programming will be held on May 27th and 28th. The Clark County 8th grade bridge program is scheduled for June 7th and 8th. Arrangements will be made for students also taking summer school classes during this time. Both programs will be held at Bonanza High School.

Registration is encouraged for planning purposes but students will be allowed to walk-in as well. Priority registration deadline is May 20th. The registration links are listed below:

DFS and ASPIRE Summer Programs

In addition to transition programs, every summer, our DFS program will host an intensive summer program for DFS students. Students attend from 3-6 weeks depending on the student grade level. A highlight of this program is that seniors will take college courses to earn college credits and they also will participate in a paid internship.

ASPIRE will be holding it's first summer program this summer. The program will run from June 15th through July 22nd. It will introduce students to a wide variety of STEM fields. The program will be filled with many interesting STEM related activities and guest speakers. It is bound to be a great opportunity for our students!
Welcome (Back) Renee!
We are pleased to announce, with the recent departure of the NSHE GEAR UP Principal Investigator (PI), the program will be moving into a different department at NSHE. Our new home will be the Academic and Student Affairs Department. Actually, that is where the program started so in many ways, NSHE GEAR UP is coming "home". Our new PI is Renee Davis, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director of Student Affairs, who assumed the role on May 1st. Renee is not a stranger to the GEAR UP family. She was PI for the last grant until 2016.
Number 3

It's that time of year again! The application for Year 3 of the GEAR UP grant has been released. The NSHE subaward will be holding it's annual technical assistance meeting on Thursday, May 20th at 10:00, to review the application, clarify information, and get answers to any questions directly from the NDE team. NSHE RFP applications are due into Amanda Annan (aannan@nshe.nevada.edu) and Janet Stake (jstake@nshe.nevada.edu) by Tuesday, June 15th.
