We are Growing!

It looks like our holiday wishes are coming true! We are so pleased to announce that Mineral County has joined the GEAR UP family! Our program will be serving both Mineral County High School and 8th graders at Hawthorne Junior High School. Both are located in Hawthorne, NV.
We have been anxiously waiting for these schools, their staff, students, and families to join our GEAR UP family. We are looking forward to working with them this spring!

See below for the introduction to their new GEAR UP Specialist, Kristy!
Introducing our new GEAR UP Staff!
Welcome Alane!
Alane McQueeney is our new GEAR UP Specialist, for Bonanza High School and Hyde Park Middle School. She has been with CCSD for 20 years! Most of that time has been with Bonanza High School. She has earned a master's degree in Counseling and Educational Psychology. Alane is passionate about connecting students with scholarships so that college can be accessible for all who want it! She is excited to work with GEAR UP and help students with their post-secondary goals.
Welcome Kristy!
Kristy Bekiares is our new GEAR UP Specialist for Mineral County High School and Hawthorne Junior High School in Hawthorne, Nevada. Kristy actually attended Mineral County High School at one time. She also attended WNC, TMCC, and ultimately graduated from UNR before going on to earn an MBA from Ashford University. She is currently in a dual master's program in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Kristy has always been very passionate about helping students figure out their higher education path and career goals!
Welcome Yulissa!
Yulissa Castillo is our GEAR UP Facilitator for Rosemary Clarke Middle School in Pahrump! Yulissa graduated from Pahrump Valley High School and attended CSN after graduation. Yulissa worked for the prior GEAR UP grant and is happy to be working with the program again! She is excited to work with students and help them with their transition into college after high school.
Welcome Katherine!
Katherine Burdick is our new UNLV First Year College Advisor! She earned her associate degree in Communication Studies at CSN and then transferred to UNLV to complete her bachelors in the same field. She is a recent graduate of the UNLV Master's of Public Administration program. As a first generation Latina student, Kat is excited to work with the GEAR UP team and help others begin their higher education journey.

We are so happy to welcome all of our new team members!
In-person Campus Visits!
We have had several groups of students from the various GEAR UP high schools visit our NSHE college campuses in southern Nevada! It is so nice to see our students on campus and experiencing all they have to offer! In addition, in February, a group of students from all GEAR UP high schools will have an opportunity to participate in a Nevada Bound trip up to UNR!
Scholarship Workshops!

Our GEAR UP team completed a series of Scholarship Workshops during October and November. This is such a great opportunity for students to learn and apply to various scholarship programs that will help them attend a college or career training program after high school! One notable result, we had over 600 students apply for the Promise Scholarship program at CSN! This program is also available at our other community colleges, GBC, TMCC, and WNC. It is a great opportunity for students to attend a program tuition fee for up to three years!!
However you celebrate this holiday season, we wish you peace, love, and joy! We are looking forward to 2022!!
