President's Message:
I hope this bulletin finds you all in good health and with a successful start to the new year.
Thank you to Kristi Gilbert for hosting our January meeting in Argyle. We always enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the community and delicious menu from Extreme Cuisine Catering.
Guest speaker Diane Consolino spoke to us about "Setting Goals That Get Results!" Everyone procrastinates on occasion but city secretaries are known for keeping on task and getting things done. Most of us are Type A personalities after all. We all need to put our own needs and priorities at the forefront of our to-do lists.
We tell others "you're no good to so-and-so if you don't take care of yourself", but we never heed our own advice. We need to take the time to take care of our own tasks - both professionally and personally. When we take on too much at the office or in our personal lives we become irritable and less satisfied with our lives. Exhaustion and frustration bleeds from one area into another. We need to say 'no' (or at least 'not now').
I have an exercise for you: Get up from your desk and go outside. Take a walk, even if it's just around the building. Take deep breaths until you stop thinking of the endless emails, phone calls, and reports awaiting you. Just stop thinking about everything. Let your mind rest for 15 minutes. Now just 'look' - look at a tree, a flowerbed, another person walking on the street. Smile. Smile some more. Realize YOU are important. Tell yourself you will do this 15 minute exercise every day for two weeks. Let this exercise become a habit. Let the habit heal and enrich your soul!

Registration has opened for our February membership meeting to be held at the Addison Conference Center, 15650 Addison Road, Addison, TX 75001
Our guest speaker will be Caitlan Smelley, Assistant to the Addison City Manager & current President of the Urban Management Assistants of North Texas ( UMANT). Ms Smelley will be speaking on Emotional Intelligence. Join us as we learn how to make emotional responses work in our favor.
Registration closes on Friday, February 10th.

The Professional Seminar Committee has been working hard to bring us an Athenian Dialogue this spring. This is a perfect opportunity to acquire both re-certification and CMC/MMC credits. We hope you'll participate! Remember, space will be limited, so register as soon as you receive the invitation.
The Seminar will be held on Wednesday, April 12th at the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), Grand Hall, at 636 South Main Street. Grapevine, TX 76051.
The book we will be studying is Profiles in Courage  by John F. Kennedy, a 1957  Pulitzer Prize-winning   volume of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by eight  United States Senators   throughout the Senate's history. Facilitator Mac Woodward has a Master's Degree in History and is the Director of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. I look forward to his undoubtedly unique perspective on this influential book.

BIG thanks to the Membership Committee for their hard work in the first quarter. The NTMCA currently has ninety-three members! The Committee is reaching out to potential new members as well. If you know of anyone that has moved into our area or that otherwise will benefit from our training programs and networking, please urge them to join our chapter. Encouraging others to learn about our organization strengthens our effectiveness in our communities. Membership Applicationscan be found on the website. Checks must be made out to 'NTMCA' and mailed to Amy Shelley as indicated. Please contact Membership Chair Laurie Garber if you have any questions.
The Board recently distributed the 2017 Membership Survey . We are looking for input on how to improve our services to you - your education goals, support needs, networking opportunities, and more. The link will be active from January 20th until 5pm on February 3rd. If you experience any problems accessing the survey, please contact Laura Bell at 972-450-7017 or
As always, thank you all for your continued support of our organization, of the Board and Committee Members, and of each other. The NTMCA continues to shine and be a leader among the TMCA affiliates. YOU make it happen and we all benefit!
Respectfully Yours,   Carol Borges, President

Did You Know.....
The North Texas Municipal Clerks Association, began as the North Central Texas City Secretaries' Association in 1958.  Mr. Hugh Millican was unanimously elected as President of the Association and Ms. Mary Gilliland acted as Secretary. Officers consisted of a president and secretary/treasurer until 1961 when a vice-president position was created.  In the late 1980's, the name changed from North Central Texas City Secretaries' Association to North Texas Municipal Clerks Association. The secretary/treasurer appointment was split creating a new appointment of treasurer and a historian position was also added.  NTMCA has come a long way from membership dues of $10 to $30 and all the 80's hairdos but through all that growth the same focus continues to be educating our members and future leaders.  Our association holds one of the largest and most active memberships in the Texas Municipal Clerks Association (TMCA).  Our membership today stands at 94 members and growing.
