Feature Article: AIDD Clinic Roundtable & Conference
Nova Southeastern University's (NSU)
Shepard Broad College of Law held its first annual community roundtable "Fitting the Pieces Together for our Adults with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities," on Thursday 23rd of March 2017 at the Panza Maurer Law Library.
The Shepard Broad College of Law Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) Law Clinic, which coordinated the roundtable, was made possible by a generous donation from The Taft Foundation. Howard Rothman, Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of The Taft Foundation in opening remarks said "one of the things you need is a strong advocate."

Commencement is a recognition and celebration of academic achievement and the lasting contributions that students have made to the university. Families, friends, and the general public are cordially invited to attend commencement. Defunding of Legal Services Corporation
March 16, 2017
Dean Jon Garon joined over 165 other law school deans in the United States in a statement against the potential defunding of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) by the U.S. Government. The LSC supports many low-income people and in defunding, there would be incredible losses for families, seniors, veterans and all those without advocates to protect their legal right to counsel. The Florida Bar has also taken a strong position in favor of continued LSC funding. An article posted to the LSC website (March 16, 2017), "
Legal Services Corporation Confident of Bipartisan Support in Congress despite President Trump's Call to Defund" shares further information on the ramifications of the proposed agenda.

On March 24, 2017, Chrystal Robinson, Annializ Lima Hevia, and Saamia Shaikh, took the national "Best Oral Presentation" at the L. Edward Bryant, Jr. National Health Law Transactional Competition. The team members are pictured with their coach, Professor Kathy Cerminara. The competitors are asked to enable the client to make important business decisions while complying with a complex set of health laws.

provided the luncheon keynote presentation at the Master of Jurisprudence Conference hosted by St. Mary's University School of Law and The University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law in San Antonio, Texas on March 18, 2017. They spoke on the administrative needs for providing online Masters-level legal education.

Associate Dean Debra Moss Curtis
was awarded the Florida Bar 2017 Law Faculty Professionalism Award. This award was created to recognize a faculty member from Florida law schools who, through teaching, scholarship, and service to the profession, best supports and exemplifies their mission to promote the fundamental ideals and values of professionalism within the legal system.
Chance Meyer has accepted an offer of publication in The Mississippi Law Journal for his article, Twas the Devil: Hearing the Constitutional Infirmity of the Modern American Death Penalty in the Bygone Songs of Ozark Folkore. As an outgrowth of his death penalty scholarship, he recently received an invitation from JURIST to write an op-ed in its Academic Commentary section. You can read that op-ed, titled

Professor Michael L. Richmond
directed and performed in The Sisters Rosenweig, a Tony-Award winning play by Wendy Wasserstein which was produced at the Ramat Shalom Synagogue in Broward County.

Robert M. Jarvis and his co-author Hon. Louis Schiff
have been awarded the Society For American Baseball Research Award (SABR) for their book, Baseball and the Law: Cases and Materials which explores jurisprudence of baseball, acquainting students with the sport and the role lawyers have played in its development.

On March 30, 2017, 48 students (27 Admits and 21 AAMPLE), their families, faculty and staff attended an Admissions Reception held in the Panza Maurer Law Library to welcome them to the Shepard Broad College of Law. Associate Dean of Admissions, William Perez praised the event as "the buzz of conversation and laughter told the story and the comments received from our guests as they said goodbye confirmed that they left with a terrific impression of our school". |

On March 25, 2017, the Sports and Entertainment Law Society held the 10th Annual Sports and Entertainment Law Symposium at the Shepard Broad College of Law in Davie, FL. It was a successful event bringing together professionals in sports including legal members of the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers, prominent legal professionals specializing in intellectual property, film and television, professors at NSU Law, faculty and students pursuing this field. |

2017 "Write a Letter, Change the World" MLK Day Letter Writing Competition Winner - Congratulations Matthew Glass!
Matthew Glass is the winner of the 2017 MLK Day Letter Writing competition. Glass penned his letter with respect to the voting rights of all American citizens and progression of the United States across the years. The competition is inspired by the April 1963, 'Letter from a Birmingham Jail' written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each year NSU Law students are invited to honor the legacy of Dr. King by penning an entry into NSU Shepard Broad College of Law's Letter-Writing Competition by writing their own version of a letter on a social justice issue - including environmental responsibility, structural racism, human trafficking, LGBT advocacy, economic empowerment, educational reform, religious tolerance, prisoner rights or gender equality or other concerns of injustice and inequality.
