Greetings fellow columnists:
We were getting ready for our summer conference (seriously, y’all should be getting excited about it) and we were talking about what sets us apart from other writers and journalists. And what it came down to was this: we have opinions.
Not only do we have opinions, but we’re not afraid to share them. We research, we fact check, and put together cogent arguments, but we have different goals than the rest of journalists. We are not about objective journalism. We write to persuade.
Whether we do it through humor and our message is to see the funny lining in an otherwise tragic story (comedy = tragedy+time, after all) or through a sensitive retelling of hard facts, we’re here to tell you what we think. That’s a necessary part of our system. You can’t do that everywhere, for one. There are many parts of the world where we would be jailed for what we do, some places where we’d be executed. Ours is a tradition that goes back to the founding fathers
.
Wasn’t Alexander Hamilton just a blogger before the internet was a thing? Wouldn’t
@TheFederalistPapers be a TikTok Channel in 2024? At the very least a Substack.
Anyway, be proud of what you do.
Keep it up.
Come to the conference in July (virtually,
in your PJs and fluffy slippers) to help hone your craft and be inspired.
I’m glad you’re out there.
Be well and write on!

Just Animals Podcast Interviews NSNC Member Christine Heinrichs
Growing up in New York’s North Jersey suburbs, I knew nothing about chickens. I started writing about chickens when my daughter asked for some baby chicks, in the 1980s. We lived in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley. I searched for a book about chickens, but there wasn’t one.
My friends whispered to me, I’ve always wanted to keep chickens. I needed to write a book to help them. Being a writer, I wrote the book I wanted to read.
How to Raise Chickens was published in 2007, just as the local food movement was starting to focus attention on our food system. Backyard chickens became the symbol of local food. How to Raise Poultry followed in 2009. Both have since been updated. The Backyard Field Guide to Chickens was published in 2016.
When How to Raise Chickens was published in 2007, people were puzzled. “Is it a cookbook?” Today, every person I talk to is either raising chickens or knows someone who is. Chickens became the mascot of the local food movement. I wrote a History of the American Poultry Association, which is part of the APA’s 150th-anniversary celebration this year.
"My B.S. is in journalism from the University of Oregon, making me a Fighting Duck. Perhaps that was fortuitous and foretold a future that included a lot of poultry!"
Christine's magazine articles appear regularly in poultry-related publications. She is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, Society of Professional Journalists, Society of Environmental Journalists, Northern California Science Writers Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, and Ten Spurs, the honorary society of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. She is also a member of the American Poultry Association, the American Bantam Association, and the Livestock Conservancy. Currently, she lives on California’s Central Coast, in an unincorporated rural community. where she keeps a small flock of a dozen hens, some old friends and some newcomers.
