NOVA VOCE NEWS
APRIL  2017
Hello to all of our musical friends, supporters and audience members!

We’re Still Here…   Suddenly, with no warning, winter has disappeared and spring is present in Nova Scotia. The men of Nova Voce have spent the past four months practising for the spring’s singing season, which will see three concerts performed in May honouring Canada’s sesquicentennial  anniversary. How does Nova Voce celebrate Canada’s 150th  birthday?  Why, by performing works that are written or arranged by Canadian composers, of course. From contemporary songs by Matthew Emery, Jeff Enns and Mark Sirett to well-known tunes by Ian Tyson and the late and much missed Diane Loomer, Bryan and the guys have put together another memorable show. Come and be inspired with love, joy, laughter, and occasionally, tears as Nova Voce brings the sound it is so famous for to venues in Cape Breton, Truro, and Halifax. As always, songwriters from the Maritime provinces will be well represented: works by  John Gracie, Leon Dubinsky and Rita MacNeil are sprinkled throughout our repertoire.

Hey, Nova Voce!  We missed your winter fundraiser.

We’ve had a few inquiries about our winter fundraiser, or more to the point – why we didn’t have one! Well, we heard you, so this year we will be putting on a fundraiser during the warmer weather. Details are still being worked out, but you can look forward to a new venue, a new concept, and, as usual, some new music!

As you know, Nova Voce is a travelling choir, performing on the road in Nova Scotia and serving as singing ambassadors for Nova Scotia across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe. While a large percentage of the costs come from the pockets of our members, we use our concert ticket sales to support the purchase of music, honoraria for our musical staff, venue and equipment rental. Our fundraising events go to support  our travel expenses, so we really appreciate your inquiries and look forward to seeing you closer to the summer – more details will be sent your way as soon as we have things confirmed.

CONDUCTOR'S CORNER

Bryan Crocker, Artistic Director

As we come to the end of another successful season for Nova Voce, planning for the next season and beyond is well underway.  The many roles of the artistic director include always being on the lookout for new music, program ideas, commissioned piece ideas, perusing the library for hidden gems, and giving thoughts to any special collaborations or concerts that we want to explore.  As well, continuing education for the artistic staff is a very important aspect of musical life.  This can take various forms such as attending as many concerts as possible and observing other choirs and choir directors in action, watching choir videos on You Tube and other social media (which brings the world to your laptop), attending annual or biannual conferences to network with your peers and world class choirs, and attending conducting workshops from time to time to further refine techniques and to be mentored by world-class clinicians.  I am privileged to have received support from Nova Voce over the years for some of these continuing education opportunities.  We are very fortunate in Nova Scotia to have a well-run and organized choral federation.  The Nova Scotia Choral Federation (NSCF) does a wonderful job in providing workshops, training and participation opportunities covering every aspect of a choral musician’s life.  For 40 years the NSCF has been hosting continuing education events hosted by world-class clinicians, providing access to both an extensive in-house library as well as maintaining connections to other national/international libraries of choral repertoire.  I am very proud to have led Nova Voce for the past two seasons, and look forward to many more years of artistic collaboration.
