The colour of the leaves tell us that fall is arriving here in our little corner of the world, and with fall comes the start of Nova Voce’s performing season. The guys are hard at work learning new repertoire and dusting off some old repertoire just for you! And we have some news….

LEADERSHIP NEWS!
Nova Voce is pleased to tell you that we’ve doubled our musical leadership staff. That’s right! Bryan Crocker and Bill Perrot have both agreed to take the musical helm of the group for this singing season, and hopefully many years to come. Both of our directors bring years or training, experience, and talent to their new combined role. Aristotle’s oft quoted words, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” couldn’t be truer as our two musical leaders bring both synergy and energy seldom seen in choral co-leadership models on our musical journey. And further good news: our accompanist, Lynn Pelton, has agreed to a new two year contract. We look forward to her continued virtuosity and skills making us sound good!

KICK-OFF WORKSHOP
On the last weekend of August the men of Nova Voce welcomed Fran Farrell as our guest director for an afternoon workshop that was a little bit “different” than those we usually attend.
Fran put us through our singing paces and emphasized the physicality of singing – how your body and movement impact the sound you make. From massages (well, if you consider having a fellow singer rub / beat on your back and shoulders a massage) through a ‘call and response’ vocal exercise which saw individuals making up melodies and sounds and others improvising or continuing that original sound to improvised lyrics on a series of chord progressions, she had the men well out of their comfort zone. The difference in sound as the afternoon progressed was noticeable. What did we learn? Well, we learned some of us could write or sing short verses quite well…. Some of us, that is. We learned just singing your own name in a note pattern / tune that you thought represented you could be challenging (and fun). Most of all, the afternoon reinforced the joy we all get from singing and made us all realize that we can enjoy music in ways we don’t always think about while we’re standing there in straight lines wearing tuxedos. Thank you, Fran, for the afternoon! We hope you had as much fun as we did.

This family-oriented night will let you take a turn at the Spin-2-Win wheel, show off your skills at the Bean Bag Toss, send one of the choir members (or someone else there) to jail, dress up at the photo booth and buy a ticket for the chance to conduct a song for the choir! Keep an eye out for the chance to win one of our raffle baskets and make sure you participate in our Cake Walk. It’s like musical chairs for adults, except you get cake if you win!
