President's Message

Gordy Robinson MMR®

As we usher in the new year, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible community of model railroaders we've built together. The successes of our organisation in the past year reflect not only our passion for model railroading but also the bonds of friendship and shared creativity that define our National Model Railroad Association.

In the coming year, let's continue to build upon the foundation we've established, creating more opportunities to enjoy our hobby together, fostering new friendships, and inspiring the next generation of model railroaders. As your President, I am honored to lead such a dedicated and talented group. May the coming year bring endless opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and the joy of seeing our model railroads come to life.

Wishing you a Happy New Year filled with the fulfillment of all your model railroad dreams.

Best Wishes

Gordy

Surfliner 20204 NMRA National Convention

Pat Raymer

President, PSR

Hi everybody! Happy New Year! In this issue of the eBulletin I will share with you some of the prototype tours we have planned for the SurfLiner 2024 NMRA National Convention in Long Beach, CA from Aug. 4 to 11, 2024.

Southern California Railway Museum: Explore the West’s largest collection of railway locomotives, passenger and freight cars, streetcars, interurban electric cars, and buildings and other artifacts dating from the 1870’s. Ride streetcars, interurban electric cars, and trains on the Museum railway. Visit the Museum’s collection of more than 200 streetcars and railway vehicles to experience the early days of electric, steam, and diesel railway transportation in and around Los Angeles. We will also feature the “Run One” experience, where you can actually run a locomotive or street car (extra fare). This is a full day tour.

Los Angeles Union Station: Completed in 1939, the Los Angeles Union Station is widely regarded as the “last of the great train stations”. Built in the Mission Moderne style, it is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the western United States. Our tour will include a behind-the-scenes look, plus the ATSF 4-8-4 #3751 and the ATSF SD45-2 #5704 in its bicentennial paint scheme.

Metro Rail Fleet Services: This tour will visit one of the shops that inspects, cleans, and repairs Los Angeles County’s light rail commuter trains. Learn how they keep ‘em on the rails!

Travel Town: Founded in 1952, Travel Town features a vast array of historic steam and diesel-electric motive power, even an ATSF Doodlebug! Many examples of rolling stock, vehicles, and historic artifacts are on display. While there, we will visit the “East Valley Lines”, a large N scale club layout also on the property.

Rail Giants Museum: This is where the journey began for the restoration of the Union Pacific 4014 “Big Boy” locomotive. Rail Giants features displays of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe steam locomotives, and other examples including a Sunkist Climax, a 0-6-0 with a slope-back tender, and more. How about a Nickel Plate Road business car, or a preserved ATSF depot? They’re all here! We will also visit the Fairplex Garden Railroad on this tour.

Gemco Yard: A former Southern Pacific yard, Gemco is now operated by the Union Pacific and is where the “Guadalupe Hauler” is assembled for its run north to Guadalupe, north of Santa Barbara. This tour will be hosted by Mike Osborne, a UP Conductor/Brakeman, who worked this yard when it was delivering parts to the GM assembly plant (thus Gemco), turning out Camaros among other models. He will relate stories of the heyday of this yard, as we watch the Guadalupe Hauler being made up.

All of the tours above will be conducted by bus, and we are currently working on more! We will also provide a list of popular railfanning locations that you can visit on your own, including the famous Tehachapi Loop and Cajon Pass. Join us on the other side of the “velvet rope” at the SurfLiner 2024 NMRA National Convention. Register today at: www.surfliner2024.org.
