New Milford Public Library Newsletter - February 2024
Thanks for voting New Milford Public Library as the first place winner for Libraries in Litchfield Magazine's "The Best of Litchfield County 2024 Readers' Choice." We are so honored and humbled by your votes. Check out the article here: https://litchfieldmagazine.com/readers-choice-results-2024/
The staff at NMPL wants to wish the very best to both Helen Cherney and Joyce Hermonat, who have recently retired from the Board of Trustees. We especially were inspired by Helen's art expertise and blessed with Joyce's leadership and guidance through the library renovation. Thank you sincerely for your wonderful service to NMPL.
Good News!
We have good news--all late fines on DVDs, magazines, and audiobooks are going to be waived in March! Museum passes and Library of Things items are $2.00 per day when returned late. Hotspots are $5.00 per day when returned late.
Another big change in March is that your checked out items will automatically renew two times, if no other patrons have placed holds on them. Please note that if an item is checked out more than 42 days after its due date, it will be marked lost and this would block your account. Once the lost item is returned, the account will be cleared and active again.
Also, as a reminder, the library has loads of books on the second floor, both adult fiction and nonfiction. The books on the first floor are only from the last three months, so please make your way upstairs for more great titles.
Please note that the library will be closed February 19 for Presidents' Day.
Don't forget--Winter Reading goes through February 16! It's not too late. Here are the guidelines:
- Join anytime until February 16. Ages 18 and older.
- Email your entries to aberkun@newmilfordlibrary.org--or bring your log to the library. The first time you log a book, we’ll add your name to our records and add a raffle ticket for you. E-books and e-audiobooks count, too!
- Receive three raffle tickets for every program you attend. See our calendar for program offerings.
- Receive two raffle tickets for every book you read off of our Bonus Reading List. Come to the library for the list--or look on our website.

February Friendly Finds
Q: What do Thomas Edison, Rosa Parks, Charles Darwin, and Laura Ingalls Wilder have in common?
A: They were all born in February! Is there a person in history that you particularly admire? Is there a celebrity/politician/artist whose name you know, but little else about them? Browse through the offerings at Friendly Finds. Learn what inspired someone to pursue and achieve their goals - explore their life with a biography.
Q: What makes a great gift for Valentine’s Day?
A: Flowers and candy may be fine, but how about a book (or two!)? Fiction or non-fiction, adult or child – you’re certain to find something in Friendly Finds that will interest your valentine! New titles are added regularly, so check back often. Cash, check, and Venmo are accepted for payment. As always, the profits support library programs and activities.

The New Milford Public Library will host an exhibit by artist Denise Trach entitled "Flow." The display may be viewed during regular library hours from February 9 through March 21. The library will have a reception on February 10 from 2:00-4:00. Ms. Trach says, "My life is full and busy in all wonderful ways. I am the mother of two daughters in college, and I married my college sweetheart almost 25 years ago. But no matter how busy I am, I make art every day, and it is then when I am the most peaceful—in my flow." For more information, contact the library at 860-355-1191.
