NEXT STEPS FOR THE LTA
Thank you for making the Lymphedema Treatment Act HR930/S497 the most supported healthcare bill in 2017! This achievement would not be possible without grassroots advocates like you, who make their voices heard by writing letters, making phone calls, attending meetings and more!
With more than 350 cosponsors (304 in the House and 50 in the Senate), some might wonder why the number of cosponsors matter and what are the next steps in getting the LTA passed.
A small bill like the LTA is never passed as a stand-alone measure, regardless of the number of cosponsors. It's not that it can't be, it's just that Congress has decided to not operate that way. Therefore, passage is dependent upon a "legislative vehicle" - meaning, being included in a package of bills or attached to a larger bill. And, the greater the number of cosponsors, the greater the chances of being chosen when a suitable vehicle comes along.
Congress will soon have to address a number of expiring Medicare provisions, and are planning to do so through something referred to as a Medicare Extenders Package. This would be an ideal legislative vehicle for the LTA. That is why, in addition to continuing to gather cosponsors, we are urging everyone to contact leadership offices asking that the LTA be included.
