Dear Parents and Guardians of students in grades 7-9,

New Jersey public schools are required to issue a statewide assessment called the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA). It will be administered to students in grades 3 through 9. The test is designed to measure whether students are meeting the NJ Student Learning Standards in English/Language Arts, and Mathematics.

Participation in the NJSLA exams is required for all students in grades 7 – 9 at Park Ridge Jr./Sr. High School. We will be administering the English/Language Arts portion of the test on the mornings of April 30 and May 1. The Mathematics sections will be administered on the mornings of May 7 and 8. (Please note that all 8th grade students will also be taking the Science 8 assessment on May 14 and 15, but will be following our regular bell schedule.)

During the testing days listed above, students in grades 7 through 9 will report to school at the regularly scheduled time (7:45 am). Students will report directly to their testing rooms. The NJSLA testing will take place from 7:50 am to approximately 9:45 am each day. All classes will meet on an abbreviated schedule following testing. The school day will finish as usual at 2:44 pm. A period-by-period schedule can be found HERE.

Below are a few ways that students can prepare for the NJSLA:

  • Make sure their laptop is fully charged and that they bring their charger with them to school.
  • Make sure they have wired earbuds with them for testing.
  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before the assessment. Start their day off with a good breakfast so that they have plenty of energy to take the test.
  • Read the directions and questions carefully on each part of the test.
  • Pace themselves during the test and budget their time so they have a chance to answer all the questions and the essay prompts.
  • Each testing unit is approximately 90 minutes long. If a student completes a unit early, they will be permitted to read a recreational book until the testing session is completed.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of your children. Please be in touch with my office if there are any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Troy Lederman

Principal, Park Ridge Jr./Sr. High School
