Greetings,
Apple picking, corn mazes and roads packed with leaf peepers — yes, it's fall in New Hampshire! While the summer's good weather has extended into October, we know winter will bring us indoors and with it, there will be housing challenges for many people.
Local CAP agencies are good resources for those experiencing housing insecurity. They received federal CARES Act funds to provide housing assistance to NH renters and landlords impacted by COVID-19.
We're taking a look at how local development impacts housing, tax rates, and land use and value in a series of webinars by Joe Minicozzi of Urban3. These impacts can vary widely from one end of town to the other, often in surprising ways. Minicozzi's firm analyzed 15 communities around the state (as well as Manchester in 2018). Check the event schedule and register for any of the free presentations.

Our Fall Housing Market Report
Eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, New Hampshire's housing market is showing some interesting trends: inventory is still low, prices are up, and very low interest rates are driving buyers. Also in this edition, economist Russ Thibeault and UNH researcher Kristine Bundschuh examine the Granite State's changing demographics and migration trends.

A new NHPBS documentary by Jay Childs, in partnership with Peter Francese and Lorraine Stuart Merrill, explores the economic and social realities of workforce shortages in our state -- one of the oldest states in terms of median age. It examines what is needed to make the state welcoming to young people, families and essential workers. Communities & Consequences II follows up on its namesake documentary after 10 years with the film, a book and community conversations. Learn more and check airdates at NHPBS.org.

Federal housing policies in the '40s and '50s and how their segregation mandate undermined the ability of Black families to own homes and build wealth was the subject of Richard Rothstein's recent webinar and book, The Color of Law. This event was presented by the Center for Ethics in Business & Governance at Saint Anselm College.

"Having housing assistance has been a factor in my life that my family and I are incredibly thankful for. Since my mother's cancer diagnosis, the anxiety of not being able to afford a decent place to live would be running through my head... [now] I am able to focus on my life and educational career."
In her scholarship application, Corrine wrote a compelling essay about how important housing assistance has been for her family. The Epsom resident was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the New Hampshire Housing Authorities Corp. These grants are available to current recipients of housing assistance from a New Hampshire housing authority. Corrine is a freshman at the University of New England, studying to be a teacher.
