HOW YOU CAN HELP KIDS OVERCOME A TWO-YEAR BUILDUP
OF COVID ANXIETY
Two years into the pandemic, children continue to struggle with anxiety, triggered by what they see at home, at school, and in their social interactions. While parents typically do everything possible to shield their children from any type of serious danger, threat, or trauma, Covid has touched everyone on some level. Avoiding Covid has been virtually impossible.

“I’ve been able to see the whole trajectory of the pandemic from the beginning,” said Kelly Rivadeneyra (Master of Social Work), LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) at Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB). “When young children see their parents worry, and they see the measures taken to stop the spread of Covid, they start to understand the world isn’t as safe as they thought.”
HOW EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES CAN HELP CHILDREN
WHEN TALK THERAPY DOES NOT
People of all ages, including young children and teens, may have difficulty talking about certain topics. When talk therapy isn’t working, expressive therapies may be able to help.

“I like to think of expressive therapies as other languages that can be used in therapy,” said Jessica Hauck, LAC (Licensed Associate Counselor), ATR (Registered Art Therapist) at Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB). “All expressive therapies help with externalizing. In other words, they create situations where it’s not necessary to address difficult topics directly. Addressing them indirectly can be just as helpful.”

When children can express their emotions indirectly through activities other than talking about their own experiences, they often feel safer. They may also benefit from a different perspective by viewing a situation from the outside looking in, almost as if it wasn’t happening to them.
THE SHOP AT NFSB INVITES YOU TO A NEW HIGHER END "BOUTIQUE"
TO SUPPORT OUR SERVICES
Recent visitors to The Shop at Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) may have noticed the addition of a new room filled with even more “great finds”! These are the enthusiastic words often heard when speaking with Peg Conca, Manager of the NFSB Pantry and Shop.

Peg is the passionate force behind several Shop initiatives at NFSB beginning with the Winter Wonderland Sale in the fall of 2020, outdoor bag sales in the Spring and Fall, and the new “boutique” space this winter.

“We installed a new door that connects The Shop to the conference room,” Peg said. “This allowed us to create a special place to display higher-end merchandise from well-known brands at an affordable price.”
FREE WORKSHOP TO FOCUS ON HEALTHY BODY IMAGE
AND EATING DISORDERS
Nutley Family Services Bureau (NFSB) is excited to continue its free Mental Health Monthly Workshop Series with “Promoting Healthy Body Image & Habits: How to Identify and Support Someone with an Eating Disorder.” This community education event will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at 7 pm at 169 Chestnut Street in Nutley.

Kristen Petullo, Master of Social Work (MSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), who spent 10 years working with adults, children, and adolescents in eating disorder programs in various levels of care prior to joining NFSB, will lead the workshop.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR SCOUNTING FOR FOOD DRIVE 2022!
Last year, the Scouting for Food Drive was another record-breaker as Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) accepted more than 44,000 food items, thanks to local Scouts, parents, troop leaders, volunteers, and generous residents of Nutley. This year, we’re shooting even higher!

On Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 9:30-5, Scouts of all ages will be collecting non-perishable, shelf-stable items for The Pantry at NFSB. Peg Conca, NFSB Pantry and Shop Manager emphasized, “Given the enormous volume of food that this event produces each year and the ever-present challenge of food insecurity, we need more volunteer help then ever before!”
VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR A NIGHT AT THE RACES, SET TO RETURN
ON SATURDAY, APRIL 23RD
Denise Roman’s first major event as a volunteer for Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) was A Night at the Races in 2019. To say she was blown away would be an understatement.

“There was so much energy in the room,” Denise said. “Dave (Popkin, NFSB trustee and professional sportscaster, currently serving as a radio announcer for Seton Hall basketball and on various TV networks) was magnificent as the announcer. Then you hear the bugle play, the racing starts, and people jump out of their seats to cheer for their horse. It was the most fun event I’ve ever worked!”

After a two-year hiatus, A Night at the Races is back, much to the delight of the Nutley community. A Night at the Races, a benefit for NFSB, will be held at the Starlight Dance Center, 7 High Street in Nutley, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 6:30 pm.
