"La suerte de la fea"

con

Luciana Dulitzky y Federico Berthet

A Defining Force of Postwar Latin American Art

New York, NY, June 15, 2023— The Jewish Museum presents the first survey exhibition in the United States of Marta Minujín, a defining force of Latin American art whose trajectory intersected with the major artistic developments of the postwar period while reflecting a singular spirit and vision infused by her sharp intellect, irreverent humor, and performative presence. This timely exhibition responds to a renewed interest in feminist, Pop, and Latin American art by investigating one of their leading figures. Marta Minujín: Arte! Arte! Arte! includes nearly 100 works drawn from the artist’s archives in Buenos Aires as well as private and institutional collections. Guillermo Kuitca

PINTURA SIN MUROS

Born in 1961 in Buenos Aires, where he continues to live and work, Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca’s distinctive cubistoid style masterfully reconciles abstraction with an illusionist form of figuration. Informed by the worlds of architecture, music, theater and cartography, Kuitca's paintings seek to incite the potential for a theatrical experience. Shifting from gestural mark making to linear precision, and incorporating diverse motifs—spanning fragmented geographical maps and architectural plans—Kuitca’s work mines varied aesthetic styles and histories. The artist’s distinctive visual language was initially developed in his Desenlace series of paintings, exhibited in the Argentinean Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

For Guillermo Kuitca’s first solo show in New York with Hauser & Wirth, guest curator Tobias Ostrander, independent curator working in Mexico City and London and former chief curator of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, has selected a group of new paintings that embody the acclaimed Argentine artist’s diverse aesthetic.

The exhibition will present evolutions in Kuitca’s use of maps and floorplans, as well as his continued application of cubistoid structures to visually fragment the surface of his paintings. Additionally, for the first time in his five-decade-long career, Kuitca will present paintings of landscapes—vistas of mountains and seas layered under architectural blueprints—that serve as new tools in his ongoing pursuit to visually articulate interior and psychological spaces that act as sites of both containment and expansive exploration.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL JANUARY 13, 2024.
