JULY 5, 2024

Live as free men, yet without using your freedom

as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God.

Summertime

And the livin’ is easy

Fish are jumpin’

And the cotton is high

                                   ~ George Gershwin ~

Grace and Peace,

It is all too easy to fall into the rhythm of the school calendar and believe that Church goes into hibernation during the summer months. Nothing could be further from the truth. In many ways, the summer, with fewer helping hands, can be even busier.

Even though the theme for Vacation Bible School was chosen over a year ago, and our preaching themes have followed it for the past year, it is no surprise that a lot of preparation occurs during the final weeks, including five movie nights. And perhaps not surprisingly, the theme for 2025 is already being developed, as are the formation plans for youth, families, and adults. Formation is a way we build community and fellowship; it informs our work for the program year.

During this “slow” time the website is being updated, service bulletins went through a recent re-formatting, and many operational documents for the parish are being reviewed and updated. Work on the welcome garden continues, and the entryway construction project is being completed. Plans are underway now for a fall migrant home set-up; and African Palms 2.0 continues to develop.

Planning for our 2025 pilgrimage to England is taking shape, with more details coming soon. It is also time to consider if we will be joining with the Diocese of Masasi Tanzania in their 100th anniversary celebration in 2026; which is also the 50th anniversary of our partnership with the Diocese through the African Palms ministry.

This summer the Adult Forum is active with the Bible Challenge, we are holding a book discussion about “The Anxious Generation”, many groups like Esther Deel, and the Casserole Club continue to meet, and the Salutations ministry continues to send cards to parishioners. The food pantry is now being stocked 2x a day, 7 days a week, which also means the restocking of the shelves is occurring more frequently.

Welcoming more participants into ministry, we are offering training for acolytes, Eucharistic Ministers, Eucharistic Visitors, and Vergers. Our various choirs may be on summer break, but the music ministry is busy with weekly services, as well as planning and ordering music for the upcoming program year. With the new Chili Cook-off just months away, plans are being formulated and special musical guests have been arranged.

This may also be a time when you are reviewing the important documents from our “Greatest Gift: End of Life Planning” seminar. There is so much going on that I am sure to have overlooked some ministries and events. Much will happen between now and the Blessing of the Backpacks and our parish picnic at the beginning of the program year. But most importantly, we miss seeing many of you; since the beginning of June, attendance has dropped 25%. A slowdown in attendance is usual, but this is unusual, as it is larger and sooner than normal, and is perhaps a reflection of our busyness.

I have read several articles recently about the importance, physically and emotionally, to disconnect from the busyness and to reconnect to something larger than ourselves. Experts tells us to give our minds a rest, if even for 10 minutes a day. This is also a time to reflect and observe, so we are better prepared for ministry. We offer this opportunity each Sunday. Give your mind, and your body a rest. Honor the Sabbath.

Peace

Fr. Henry+

THE ANXIOUS GENERATION | A Book Discussion

Sunday, July 14th @ 12pm

Jonathan Haidt's book, "The Anxious Generation" lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness. Haidt investigates the nature of childhood, and why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Join us as we discuss Haidt's call to action and the "collective actions problems" that trap us, and the four simple rules he proposes to set us free.
