JAMESTOWN/SURRY COUNTY — Starting July 8, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will operate under a new schedule and reduced service until further notice due to current staffing levels among an industry-wide shortage of critical, certified maritime positions. Despite these temporary challenges, VDOT is committed to maintaining a continuous 24-hour service for the public for as long as possible during this time.
To ensure the ferry system remains operational 24/7, we have adjusted ferry service, effective July 8, to provide at least one ferry boat running at all times. A second ferry boat will be added into service between 2 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. each day.
The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will continue to run 7 days a week, 365 days a year, transporting motorists for free in both directions across the James River between Surry and Jamestown. Once on board, the trip is approximately 20 minutes. For more information on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, including the full updated schedule, visit www.JSFerry.org.
Motorists should expect potential delays during these periods of reduced service and are encouraged to use VDOT's free 511Virginia.org website and mobile app, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date travel conditions to plan their routes before hitting the road. The VDOT 511 traffic cameras also provide views of current traffic queues from approximately 0.5 miles from the ferry boarding locations.
Alternate routes include the James River Bridge (Route 17), the Benjamin Harrison Bridge (Route 156), and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664).
VDOT appreciates the public’s understanding and patience during this time and is dedicated to returning to full-service operations as soon as resources allow.
VDOT is actively recruiting to fill the vacancies within the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry team. We invite qualified individuals to apply for these positions and join us in maintaining this essential service. For more information on available positions and to apply, please visit our careers page.
