AUGUST 2020 Newsletter
Southern Industrial Contractors recently completed a new Galvanizing Line
for one of the largest steel producers in North America.
This new Galvanizing Line will have an annual coating capability of over
400,000 tons, producing gauges between 0.013 inches and 0.160 inches,
and widths between 36 inches and 72 inches.
Southern Industrial Contractors' scope of work included the following:
  • excavation and embankment
  • underground utility installation
  • concrete demolition of existing floor slabs and foundations
  • crushing onsite shale and incorporating cement to produce a cement-treated base (CTB)
  • excavation and backfill of deep furnace foundations
  • installation of 7,600 tons of structural steel with eave heights of 135 feet
  • installation of numerous overhead cranes
  • installation of new equipment foundations
  • installation of new concrete floors
  • installation of epoxy grouting for new equipment
  • installation of structural steel for mechanical equipment
  • installation of over 700,000 SF of wall sheeting, roof cladding, and 6-inch batt insulation
  • removal and replacement of 9-acres of existing roof sheeting over the pickle-line.
Southern Industrial Contractors performed upgrades to the Pickling Line and the Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM) during the construction phase of the new Galvanizing Line. This work involved removing existing equipment, demolition of existing floor slabs/foundations, relocation of existing underground utilities, excavation of deep foundations in a shale material, installation
of new heavy concrete equipment foundations, installation of equipment anchor pockets, installation of numerous anchor bolts / embeds, and epoxy grouting of the new equipment. Southern Industrial Contractors crushed all demolished concrete with our ASTEC track-mounted crusher and reinstalled the old floor slabs as a new subbase for the new equipment foundations.
A portion of Southern Industrial Contractors' scope of work included installing
numerous 25-ton and 50-ton overhead cranes, crane runway beams, and crane rails
to support the plant operations once the new Galvanizing Line was commissioned.
This project involved working at an operating steel mill. The work areas were
extremely congested with multiple trades working on top of each other.

Southern Industrial Contractors constantly coordinated with the client as well as other trades onsite to tailor-fit a comprehensive site-specific safety program.

It paid off. Southern Industrial Contactors had over 350,000 man hours worked on this project with no recordable incidents , a significant achievement for the
entire project team.

The project team completed this work in less than 12 months despite receiving
over 100 days of adverse weather and the unforeseen difficulties
created by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
