July 22 is World Brain Day!
Last month was all about Alzheimer's Awareness, but let's take a step back and look at preventative ways we can all keep our brains healthy as we age - and no, you don't need to be a brain surgeon to learn how to do this!
| |
|
A Handful of Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp:
1. Bring on Brain Busters!
From word searches, sudoku, crosswords, puzzles and more, these help keep your brain active.
2. Boost Your Diet!
Eating certain food can help fuel your brain, and aid digestion! Incorporate leafy greens, fish, poultry, beans, and berries onto your plate.
3. Rest Up!
Did you know our brains work while we sleep? Sleep is essential to storing memories and healing our bodies. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
| |
|
4. Don't Stop Moving!
Finding ways to include exercise in your daily routine is key to getting that blood flowing to your brain! Strive for 150 min of exercise (that increases your heart rate) each week.
5. Get Social!
We (humans) are not meant to live a solitary life. Spending time with family and friends (in-person or over the phone) has many health benefits, including supporting our brain health.
| July 24th is Self-Care Day - What can you do for yourself? Rest? Hang out with a loved one? Try a new hobby? Make a point to do something for YOU! | |
NEW DEMENTIA CARE OPPORTUNITIES | |
Workshop:
Creating Engagement Opportunities
For People Living with Dementia
Offering engaging experiences for people living with dementia can be challenging as they each retain different skills. This workshop guides learners through recognizing what people with dementia CAN STILL do and adjusting experiences to meet these abilities. Learners will walk away with an Adult Art Project Manual they can use to lead their own experiences.
----------------------------------------------------
Community Presentation:
Understanding and Responding
To the Expression of Unmet Needs
A-B-C- "All Behavior is Communication"
We all express our needs through words or actions. When dementia is in the picture, it can be harder to find the right, or any, words to communicate unmet needs. As care partners, we need to get curious about what people living with brain change are trying to express. What unmet need can we help to meet? In this workshop we discuss the tools we need to better respond to expressions.

Now scheduling for fall throughout Wisconsin! Do you have a group or agency in mind that would benefit from these interactive presentations? Contact us today to set up a presentation, workshop, or even a more in depth intensive Gear Day training.

Progression of Dementia
What Skills Remain
Often the progression of dementia is measured in stages and focuses on lost skills, but this doesn’t give us the tools to provide care and support. The GEMS State Model will help you gain deeper insight into the experience of a person with brain changes and shift your support accordingly.
