We like to stick with themes for our cocktails so we chose one from the 1800s. The Mint Julep! It's a southern classic that began in the very early 1800s and later on became known as the Kentucky Derby cocktail of choice.
The first time Mint Julep was mentioned in 1803 was in a letter by a farmer in Virginia. At that time, the drink was different from the one we know today, and the reason for that is that the ice was not readily available. That changed in the mid-1800s; the first refrigeration system was built in 1834, and in 1854, the commercial ice-making machine was invented.
Using crushed ice is an important part of enjoying the Mint Julep, as it melts faster and alters the taste while sipping it.
