LA City: Wood Construction
Last week, BIA-LAV testified against the prohibition of wood construction at the City's Public Safety Committee meeting. The final outcome eventuated in the adoption of BIA requested amendments and kept the Motion from moving forward as an Ordinance. Instead, staff will prepare a report, before action is taken. For the last three years BIA has been keeping the Art Fee from moving forward in the County of Los Angeles. Yesterday, thanks to BIA's advocacy, the the Board of Supervisors chose to continue the item until September. This issue still threatens to increase the cost to build housing, but this was a hard fought delay. Contact BIA-LAV here for more information.

BIA-LAV committees are a great way to get more involved in the Chapter and with the industry. Committees typically have 5-20 participants and all BIA members are welcome to take part! Learn more here.
BIA-LAV has submitted a letter on the “A Way Home” plan. The policy initiatives, programs and introduced motions are very much in alignment with the many housing solutions that BIA-LAV has championed to increase the production of all housing types. This is a proactive action to highlight opportunities to extend these policies to all housing types.
On May 13, the City of Los Angeles Planning Commission will be reviewing an ordinance on affordable housing requirements in coastal communities. Under the proposal, the Mello Act would apply to any housing development with 5 or more residential units, a broader pool of projects compared to the 10-unit minimum in the interim procedures. In February, the Los Angeles Planning & Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) took up the City's Department of Planning Fee update. However the hearing was stopped due to connectivity issues and will be reheard on April 6, 2021. BIA submitted a letter and will be testifying against the fee increase.
