Summaries of timely road safety news, events, and alerts

Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Hipp

Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno. It's a phrase you may not know in its Latin form, but you very likely know it in English: All for one, and one for all. You may have even heard it in French, Tous pour un, un pour tous, in the well-known work of Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers. It is the unofficial motto of Switzerland and was even written into the cupola of the Federal Palace of Switzerland in 1902.

But what does this phrase have to do with traffic safety? The World Health Organization recently released the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 stating that 1.19 million people die annually in road traffic crashes. That's a huge number. I would guess that most of us have been in a car crash at some point, have known someone who has been in a car crash, or sadly, likely have even known someone who died in a car crash.

So when it comes to focusing on road safety and saving lives on the world's roadways, we are all in this together--all for one, one for all. Road safety is not a competitive advantage. We all have to work together to educate and train drivers, to promote safe driving behaviors, to bring safe driving resources into the communities where we drive, and to advocate for safe infrastructure especially in low- and middle-income countries where 90 percent of road traffic fatalities occur.

NETS provides a number of free safe driving resources to work toward this goal, but we want to make our memberships more accessible to more organizations. Therefore, we are launching two new membership options: a small business membership for fleets with fewer than 100 employees, and a Benchmark-only membership so more companies can take advantage of the opportunity to participate in NETS annual benchmark program and compare their fleet safety program with leading, best-in-class fleet safety programs and identify best practices to put in place a cost-effective, integrated, and comprehensive plan to improve their performance.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said it best: "Safe mobility is a crucial aspect of the universal right to health, a fundamental right of every human. Mobility must not, and need not, come with a tragic cost in human lives."

Let's work together to advance road safety: All for One, and One for All.
