Becoming a Teacher for Becoming Teachers

Laura Manni wrote an article for the What School Could Be community in which she reflects upon her time in Uganda with developing teachers. Together, they developed their stories of learning to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a teacher?" Enjoy their journey through this article, Becoming a Teacher for Becoming Teachers!

The NESC at a Glance

NESC You're Hired! Events Coming to Schools This Spring

You're Hired! is an experience that allows students to use STEAM along with 21st Century Skills to solve real, present-day problems. Students work as a team (company) to find a unique solution and then present their proposals to a boardroom. Through strong research and planning, innovative design, and a persuasive presentation, a team will hear the words, "You're Hired!"

You're Hired! can be an introduction to project or problem-based learning. There is no right answer to the problem presented within each of the You're Hired! modules. These problems are designed to engage students in the 4 C's (communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking) and STEAM. With this event, the process is more important than the product, although the students delight in showcasing the product!

Participating students will engage in the following You're Hired! activities:

  • Company Role and Responsibility Development
  • CTE & Career Exploration
  • 4 C's Study and Application
  • Company Name, Logo, & Slogan Development
  • Solution Research, Planning, Designing, Prototyping, Testing, and Evaluation
  • Presentation Planning and Delivery
  • Application and Execution Reflection

As a culminating activity, student teams will present their solutions to a "board room" of community members who will provide feedback regarding team solutions, presentation skills, and 4 C's applications.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Bring STEAM Experiences to Students

Students of the NESC's 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) sites are engaging in hands-on learning for extended discovery and application of content standards and essential skills. This learning is possible through collaboration between the students' educators and the NESC with our STEAM to GO! kits.

NESC Student Services Specialist, Cortney Shuley, curated and developed 75 unique kits (more than 200 in all) to be rotated quarterly through 14 NESC 21st CCLC, K-12 school sites. Each site receives about 7 kits per quarter. The NESC collection of kits include activity modules from STEM2D, Mindworks, STEMfinity, Skillastics, Project Wild, ND Forest Service/Project Learning Tree, Every Monday Matters, and Playworks. Each kit comes with a guide including the lesson description and plan, materials list and materials to implement the lesson, kit directions, and resources (including access to the NESC STEAM to GO! Padlet with further supports).

Site instructors are encouraged to complete a survey following implementation of each kit. One data point collected via the survey is students' level of engagement throughout the activities. Since September 2023, 36 educators completed the survey.

  • 92% reported students being "moderately engaged" or "extremely engaged" with their STEAM to GO! kits.
  • 61% reported students being "extremely engaged" with their STEAM to GO! kits!

Survey respondents added the following comments:

  • "The kids absolutely loved this!"
  • "Kinders said, “It was fun.” Science is so cool!”
  • "This (Project Wild) was by far the students' favorite kit! The students couldn't get enough of all the different animals and being able to touch what some felt like. BIG HIT!"
  • "Challenging but in a good way!"

We appreciate our sites' feedback as part of our continuous review and improvement process!

Celebrations!

Congratulations to Warwick 2nd grade student, Allen, who was recently named Grade 2 Regional Winner - West Region in the 2024 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest (and to his educator, Mr. Leo Frondarina)! Allen will now advance to compete against grade level peers in three other regions for the top prize of Grand National Champion!
