NEPTA News and Events
December 2021
|
|
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you have all returned from your Thanksgiving holidays feeling rested and rejuvenated. NEPTA has concluded all of its events for 2021 - we can now put up our feet and relax, at least for a little while! NEPTA is run by so many dedicated volunteers - and I'd like to thank each and every one of you who has helped us get to this point in our season. It wouldn't have been possible without you!
Our Music for Hope Recital in November was a success. The recitals featured so many inspiring and beautiful performances by our students. Including both registration fees and donations, we raised $3,342 for the Music for Hope program.
Our NEPTA colleagues Simon Xu, Robert Finley, and Jia Shi performed works in the Teachers' Masterclass by Chopin and Scriabin. The noted Scriabin scholar and interpreter Dmitry Rachmanov gave a fascinating masterclass full of interpretive insights into these two composers.
Finally, we are so happy to announce the return of in-person recitals in 2022. The Junior I recital (grades K-4) will take place on January 9th. The recitals will take place at the First Parish Church in Watertown. They will be performed live for a limited audience, and livestreamed for viewers at home.
I wish everyone a wonderful Holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you all in 2022.
With best wishes,
Sivan Etedgee
President

Composer Spotlight: Charles Shadle
by Barbara Engel
|
|
As teachers and performers, we constantly look for new piano scores to broaden our repertoire, particularly music by contemporary composers and perhaps, more recently, with a focus on those of diverse backgrounds. I’d like to introduce you to a brilliant and prolific local composer, Dr. Charles Shadle—an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma—who teaches composition, theory, and music history as senior lecturer at MIT (See https://mta.mit.edu/person/charles-shadle). Shadle has composed a number of pieces for piano solo and ensemble that might interest NEPTA members, for their students or for their own repertoire. I’ve chosen to highlight a few of his pieces, progressing from easier to more advanced works.
