School Librarians Interest Group Meeting
|
39 School Librarians, authors and presenters gathered on Saturday, April 25
at the NEFLIN
School Librarians Interest Group Meeting. This full day event included workshops, resource sharing, and networking.
It was important for the group to have an event scheduled on a Saturday, and not during a regular school day. This meeting was an opportunity for many who work alone to come together to share ideas with others and leave with fresh approaches and suggestions.
Organized by Interest Group Chair Karen Robinson, the day was fun, fast-paced, and information-packed! The morning began with presentations and authors' round table discussions and continued well into an "eat and share" lunch hour. Breakout sessions were offered in the afternoon featuring a mix of practical solutions to expressed needs in the classroom and curriculum, highlighting resources used in school media programs. NEFLIN supports the professional development needs of school librarians, and seeks to increase networking and collaboration among members.

One of the takeaways from the NEFLIN Annual Survey was that many members are not aware of NEFLIN's partnership with Amazon.
It's easy! Visit http://www.neflin.org/amazon
which will lead you to the Amazon website. Then purchase any items for yourself or your library. Amazon will then provide NEFLIN with a percentage of any purchases you make.
You can also share this with friends or family!
Anyone who makes a purchase after clicking on the link at http://www.neflin.org/amazon will help NEFLIN. Your privacy is maintained as all purchases are anonymous. Thank you for your support!

UNF Library hosts FACRL Meeting
|
The Florida Academic College and Research Libraries (FACRL) invited librarians to meet on their campus April 17th.
Twenty three people attended representing eleven different institutions.
Assessment and security were the two hottest topics discussed that day. Personal development opportunities were brought up as a potential topic for a future meeting.
While we were there we received a presentation on, and tour of, the Library Commons by UNF's Director of Public Services Lisandra Carmichael. Their vision was to recreate the library as a meeting place where students could rearrange furniture - incorporating booth, couch and cafe style seating with lots of dry erase boards on wheels for students to use. They removed shelving and opened up space near windows to let in natural light which increased their seating capacity by 34%.
They added a presentation presenting room and 1,000 new electric outlets and 154 data ports. Allowing them to better serve the needs of present day students. They were able to hide unsightly wiring and cables in a sleek modern looking design framework. |
|
FACRL attendees were impressed and commented that the University of North Florida has raised the bar for academic libraries in northeast Florida.

Member Spotlight: Florida Gateway College
|
Christine Boatright, Director
Florida Gateway College (FGC) is on 100 beautiful acres of pine trees and azaleas. FGC is located in Lake City, where I-75 and I-10 cross in north central Florida. The library is the newest, largest building on campus, and opened in 2012.
The building, at 37,000 square feet is a focal point of the campus, with a state-of-the-art TV and recording studio, meeting spaces, classrooms, study rooms, and café. There is also a beautiful atrium that is designed to accommodate events and group gatherings.
The FGC Library is open to the community and offers online and print resources to Certificate, Associate, and Bachelor level students. The library hosts student club meetings and special events that include choral concerts, Black History Month Proclamations, lectures, and book signings. The library also has a circulating art collection that is always evolving.
The FGC Library has a small staff of five full-time employees. A couple of staff fun facts: one employee has worked in the FGC Library for 42 years and counting, the current library director is only the fourth since the Library first opened in 1962, and Broadway star Norm Lewis was once a work study student in the library!
