NE/SAE Governance Leaders and Their Important Work as Volunteers

Dear Members,

I am honored to be serving as Chair of NE/SAE. The association plays such an important role in getting us all outside of our bubbles of our particular organizations and sectors to receive and share good ideas and build professional development. Thank you for being a part of it. I hope to see you next week at Navigating the Future of Association Management.

One of the positive changes that my predecessor Maria Brogan, RCE brought to NE/SAE governance with the support of the Board was to recommend that beginning this governance year we appoint Vice-Chairs for each committee, in addition to Chairs. This will allow the committees to function well with the Vice-Chair supporting the Chair in their role, and to potentially develop future Chairs through the additional responsibility and opportunity to shine that comes with being in a committee leadership role. Some of the most rewarding moments in my time thus far as NE/SAE Chair have been the enthusiasm that Chairs and Vice-Chairs expressed at their appointments and the overall mission and work of NE/SAE, some of which you may have seen getting a lot of support and attention on social media.

NE/SAE has historically had a clear process for committee work, guided by charters and work plans. Some of those weren’t updated in recent years as we experienced change in the association, but we’re pleased to be bringing that back now. I would like to thank Amy Stark, CAE, Nicole Bowen, CAE, and the Chairs and Vice-Chairs for their leadership in helping us update those charters and work plans to clarify and guide the work of the organization and to facilitate communication at all levels of engagement. We welcomed the Chairs and Vice-Chairs to shape their own goals and work. In one case, we even got a recommended change of committee name! So stay tuned for a potential announcement of that after the Board considers it at their upcoming meeting.

I am excited to share that earlier this year we changed the name and focus of the Member Value Committee, renaming it the Member Value and DEI Committee to embrace NE/SAE’s strategic goals on DEI, to implement work begun by the DEI Task Force, and to establish an ongoing organizational commitment to it.

Here are the 2023-2024 NE/SAE committee Chairs and Vice-Chairs. We thank them for their service and dedication to NE/SAE:

The Georgia Society of Association Executives will host a summit in December on the challenges of AI for association executives. The event is free for NE/SAE members and is eligible for 1 CAE credit.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is the new way of communicating. For many associations to adopt this technology, it will require a willingness to learn and the openness to experiment. AI is a powerful technology that offers many benefits to your member audience, and staff members alike. Creating personalized content that is tailored to the specific interests of your members will keep them well informed and increase their engagement. In addition to delivering a personalized experience for your members, AI technology will benefit your association in multiple ways. The ability to reduce staff time, leverage analytics and insights in valuable ways, and better understand what content is resonating with your audience. Join me to discuss how AI can make an impact with your association members and to learn more about some tools that leverage AI technology such as AI newsletters, career briefs, chat bots, virtual assistants, and personalized learning. We will talk about some actionable items and tips that can help associations utilize Artificial Intelligence to improve content curation, member communication, audience engagement, and the ability to reach your members where they are.

Why Your Metrics May Need a Second Look

Associations Now by Mark Athitakis

How committed are your members to your value proposition? It might be shakier than your numbers are telling you.

I’m thinking about this in light of an article I wrote on meetings metrics for Associations Now’s latest batch of Deep Dive articles. Rich Vallaster, DES, CEM, director of marketing, trade shows & events at A2Z Events, explained in the article that these days a person registering for a conference isn’t the evidence of commitment that it used to be. Since the pandemic, associations have lowered prices and made it easier for attendees to cancel without serious penalties, making it easier for people to opt out later.

How to Plan for Possible Protesters

Convene Michelle Russell

When protesters jumped onto the stage during the 2022 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) at Chicago’s McCormick Place, they unfurled a banner as a way to draw attention to the climate crisis. Although the incident was not violent, it “turned into a really difficult issue” for the organization of Earth and planetary scientists.

“We fully agree that there should be more urgency around climate change,” Lauren Parr, AGU’s senior vice president, meetings and learning, told Convene. “I mean, you had us at ‘hello’ with that, but you can’t charge a plenary stage and take over the session to make your case. We can agree with your message but if your actions frighten people and make them feel unsafe, as a real or perceived threat, that presents an enormous challenge.
